My doctors are considering doing a colostomy and I agree with them I need to do something.  I have had 4 abcess/ fistula surgeries since the end of March.  I had a colonoscopy today and the only inflamation I have is in the rectom not in the large bowel where the crohns is, that showed no crohns activity.   Is it advisable to get a colostomy if only to allow the rectom to heal?

Hello Dreamer,

I wanted to be sure that someone addressed your question.... I think some of us may feel a bit out of our comfort zone to actually recommend or not recommend someone to have surgery. Do you trust your dr? Have you had more than 1 professional opinion? I will have to say that I had CD and had several resections in the early stages of my diagnosis (those it was already very advanced) and temp ileo in hopes that it would allow my rectum and colon to heal. It worked, but only very temporary for me. I was young and totally ignorant, and, fought having to have the ileostomy. In the end, a perm ileo was the only thing left for me to do, and I have been disease free since I got it. I wish you the best of luck and do let us know your decision.

I would suggest a second opinion if you are unsure...Crohn's can be really diffifult when it is in the rectum and trying to get it to 'heal'. Don't stop taking your Crohn's meds if you do have the ostomy...the issues don't go away just because you divert your normal process...
