Hello Everyone,

My wife is 48 and has had a colostomy for 25 years now. She has never really had much issues with it. However, for the last four days her stool has been very dark in color and recently she noticed blood in it. This is not from red foods but she does eat red Jello every couple days. She doesn't have any pain out of the ordinary. This is the first time she ever had blood in it so we are worried.

Also, they never closed her rectum so she has a little blood everyday and sometimes mucus from her rectum for the last 25 years.

What could be some issues here?

Thank you for your help

Robin

bevy63--welcome to the forum...this is a great place to find help!

What was the original diagnosis? If this has been going on for 4 days, it might be worth a call to her doctor. I have always worked on the thought that when my body starts to do something it hasn't done before, I call my doctor...sometimes I feel silly telling him, but it always puts my mind a ease. What comes out of the bottom doesn't bother me, it is a by product of not having it removed, but the "new" blood should be investigated.

I agree, anything new, esp blood like this, needs to be investigated by professionals. It could be something simple to fix, it could be something complicated, but we can't diagnose unfortunately. Please get her to go to her doctor.
I have had an ileostomy for 33 years now due to UC.

Thank you for the welcomes and replies. We just moved to South Florida and I need to find a good doctor for her out here. Is there a doctor finder online? Also, what kind of doctor should we look for? Its been 25 years since she has seen a doctor for this and we don't know what kind to seek for this situation.

Thank you for all your help.

I'd start with a GI...you can go to www.uoaa.org and click on the links page, there is a link to american gastroenterologist assoc and once you get to that site there is a link for patients...
or make it easy and just google american gastroenterologists assoc!!!! (i'm blonde idea )
