I had my surgery (ileostomy) in October of 06.  From then to now I've learned much and get along very well except for one thing....I tend to put things off.  I use M-9 deodorizer by Hollister.  I order six bottles at a time which usually lasts 5-6 weeks.  When I get down to 1 bottle I start telling myself to order more.  Then lo and behold I always run out.

During the past couple of years I've read many remedies for controlling odors including, tic tacs, mouth wash, peroxide (a little unbelieveable) and so on.  Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Six bottles only lasts you a month or more?  One bottle of the 16oz (I think) lasts me a month.  I just tip the bottle and a bit squirts out...I empty and rinse maybe 4-6 times a day.  Hmmm.  I don't think I'm doing it wrong...I don't really ever get an odor this way...that is unless I eat something super stinky.  : )  You know the foods.  : )

I'm curious about what others found too.  I didn't like the mouthwash.  I still felt it was smelly...and I'm nervous about anything else.  That M9 is some pretty good stuff, so I feel spoiled not having to smell anything ever.

Now that it's the summer I just thought about chlorine.  : )  I'm sure it's toxic, but I bet it'd work!  Right?

i dont think chlorine is a good idea, i think it would eat through your skin and your bag.

Mouthwash does work, you just need to use one that says something like kills germs. I accidentally bought one with tartar control too! So i have a fresh smelling bag with no tartar! lol.

I havent tried the peroxide, my ET said no to that, and i never bought any to try, possibly because if it got around your stoma it would dry it out.

The reason those things work is cause they kill the germs that cause the odor.

I use the M9 ONLY if i am going somewhere and then only a few drops. I have the same bottle i got when i first got my bag 2 years ago. Of course i dont use it that much, but i only put like one little squirt and it works fine.

I know chlorine isn't a smart idea...it's just super 'killer' stuff!  Have you ever added chemicals to a pool?  We have the chlorine tabs for my parents' pool and I absolutely despise touching them b/c they make my skin feel funny and smell horrible for quite some time.  Yuck.

Do you really feel the mouthwash works super well?  I just can't bare the thought of using anything but my M9.  Especially now that it's hot out.  How much mouthwash do you add each time?

I've used 3% hydrogen peroxide for about 6 years now and love it. It's only a few drops and you can safely use it as a mouthwash so it won't harm your stoma. It doesn't disguise the smell, it completely eliminates it. I wouldn't be without it at work.
I have had an ileostomy for 33 years now due to UC.

the mouthwash works well, now like if you eat something with a really strong smell, the mouthwash wont work as well.
What i used to do is put some mouthwash in my squirt bottle with my water about half and half and use this to clean out my bag, and then put about 1/4 or 1/3 cup of mouthwash in there, not much.
Itried using the little sweet breath drops, cause i thought, for some reason, that would work better, but it didnt work at all.

I am in the UK and have just had a quick google for the m9 drops.  I can only find stores which sell this in the US.  Does anyone know where I can get hold of them in the UK?

I use a product called ostomist mint drops which works quite well.  Would love to give anything to see if it works better!

Many thanks,
Elli.

I use a product called Ostofresh Deodorizer and use about 4-5 drops per empty.  They work wonderfully!

Elli...

I just checked eBay...I sometimes purchase from the UK eBay...so I found an international shipper, but the postage is fairly high.  However, the cost itself for the 16oz bottle is about $10 cheaper than what we pay medical suppliers.  Could you contact Hollister themselves and ask if they would ship to you directly?  They do have their own shipping program.

Good luck!

i use hydrogen peroxide too, it's cheap and works well. and i rinse the bag with water here and there and it seems to help. i feel like the first couple days i don't have any problem with odor, then i have to start using the peroxide.

I think there is a difference between colostomies and Illeos ... Like mine (colostomies) they smell a little more (or in my case A lot more because of how much food is actually absorbed in the digestive system. Shaz ... I think you had something on your website about that. Please respond! I just know I go through a TON of M9 drops. And I need it. So I have been told .... I think I go through two bottles of the largest size a month. Mouthwash just makes it smell worse for me and peroxide never worked. M9 rocks for me.

Now since summer makes me sweat, do I wish for something that doesn't make me feel like I am smelling 'rubber'. Any one else feel that way?

I need more details on the peroxide please..are you putting a few drops in the bag after each empty...or mixing it with mouthwash and then putting in the bag after each empty?

Badbaggirl, I don't know specifically why but for some reasons colostomy output does tend to smell worst than ileostomy output - that comes from several people I know who have had both!

UC Wife: I just had a few drops to the tail end of my bag when I empty and there is no smell whatsover next empty. DO NOT use anything stronger than the 3% solution that's found in the first aid section of your supermarket.

As I said above, it's safe enough at that dilution to be used as a mouthwash and it won't hurt your stoma either.
Ileostomy for 34 years due to UC. I had my surgery at 10 years of age.
