Hey kids! I need your advice.

I woke up this morning with some cramping pain in my abcomen and a pain at my stoma site that feels like razor blades slicing when stuff comes out. Not much is coming out though. Just mostly liquid.

I changed my appliance, b/c the stoma is a bit swollen too. I needed to give it more room.

The pain is increasing now and coming in waves. I feel nauseated, but I had a shake to try to clean myself out (ice cream usually flows right through me). The nausea is increasing too. I think I might start barfing.

I think I my gut is trying to work out an obstruction. I had  corn on the cob last night and a slaw salad at lunch yesterday. I thin the combo may have done it.

I am currently at work, and they are urging me to go to the Dr., but, you know how it is, I don't want to go if I don't HAVE to. AND which Dr. would I go to?

What do you think I should do?

If you're vomiting you need to go to the ER.
This does sound like an obstruction and the culprit is most likely corn.
If you are not vomiting you can try some other things to move the obstruction. Keep walking. Walk up and down stairs if they are near by.
Drink warm water.
Do not eat or drink shakes, this can make it worse.

I feel you....having same issues today. I think you should call and see what your surgeon thinks. I always call my surgeon if I am going to call. I hope you feel better. I am not having nausea, but dizzy and weak. I have eaten, but not much. Hope you feel better.

Hey XM. I guess this is the 'Get an obstruction Day', since we are both having issues. I feel like mine is getting worse-more painful and even less output. I called the surgeons office, but he's in surgery, so I have to wait until he's out.
I tried to eat something, but it hurts too much. I am also drinking soda, since it was on the paper about what to do if you suspect a blockage.

What does the hospital do for you when you go in for an obstruction?

I shudder at the thought of someone sticking anything into the ostomy

When it spits, it pours.
Whew! When it pushed out whatever was blocking it, it just started pouring out. It was like a volcano erupting.........pretty cool actually!
Instant relief.

Yes, you know immediately when a PO is leaving!  Good to hear you're doing better.  You can eat now but stay away from corn!

Yup, that was a partial blockage! So glad it unblocked on its own. Isn't it such a relief when it starts flowing again? The slaw salad could have been the culprit, too.

Had you been vomiting and gone to the hospital, they would have given you an NG tube to stop the vomiting and done X-Rays to make sure it wasn't a full blockage. With a partial blockage, the suction from the NG tube will cause it to unblock, and surgery is the fix for a full blockage. I know, because I've had both... several times!
