Hi ,

I think I have or had a blockage. Last night my ileostomy stopped putting out then I got pains that I felt like things were struggling to be pushed out.  Finally, i felt like things started working then all I put out was water.  Just liquid.  Today, I'm realllllly weak, dizzy when i get up and feel like fainting so i have to stay lying down.  Some cramping in my legs when I walk.  I had soup and a bit of chicken today and still water.  I'm so scared to eat.  What does this sound like? could it be exhaustion or dehydration?? Should I go to the hospital? I just don't want to deal with the long hours and all the testing....SOOOO FRUSTRATED..PLEASE HELP ME!!

Rita,
It sounds like you had a partial blockage that cleared itself up fairly quickly, so you do not have to go to the hospital. But, if this happens again and does not clear up quickly and/or you start vomiting, then you have to go to the ER. When this used to happen to me, I would call my surgeon, so she could call the hospital ahead and admit me, which made the process much quicker.

In the meantime, eat a soft diet, drink lots of water, and chew your food really well.

Take care,
Cecilia

Rita,
If your heart is racing and you feel weak, then you are most likely dehydrated. Definitely call your gastroenterologist or surgeon and let them know what's going on. They might want to give you some IV fluids to get you re-hydrated or you can try to drink lots of electrolyte enhanced water (Smart Water) at home, and see if that helps.

Thanx everyone, and rose-bud, welcome to the forum =)

I'm still feeling horrible. This is day 3 and I spoke with my surgeon on the phone and he thinks it sounds like dehydration also. They gave me nausea med to help me eat and told to drink plenty of fluids so i'll try that and then make a decision to go in to the ER to get IV.

Hope you all are doing well...thanx again for all your input

Rita,
I'm so glad you spoke with your surgeon. If you do need to get IV fluids, it will make you feel so much better very quickly!

Are you having a lot of output? If so, have you tried metamucil or imodium to slow it down? It's also a good idea to eat foods that help thicken the output, like mashed potatoes, baked chicken, bread, peanut butter, bananas, rice, and pasta and avoid drinking caffeinated beverages, like coffee and soda, until you get the dehydration under control. Drink Smart Water or Gatorade, since they have electrolytes in them.

Take care,

Cecilia

Has your surgeon or GI done some blood work to make sure your electrolytes are ok? If you still have watery output and are feeling weak and lousy, please get to the ER or to your doc asap.

I let my recent dehydration go about three days too long and wound up in the ER and stayed overnight. Was trying to solve it myself with powerade and salt--just didn't work. Couldn't eat, extremely nauseated, weak, charlie horses, muscle cramps. Was lying on the floor in my office thinking I was just "overdoing it." I needed the IV. It was scary. Even though I was coherent and somewhat functioning, my sodium was at 100--very dangerous. But that was me.

i hope you are ok.

thank u all...I actually got really bad with all the leg cramping and the nausea panic attacks and even fevers. I went into the ER, they had me on IV for a couple of hrs and now i'm back to normal.

Thank God it was only a few hrs of emergency room...hahaha...

Rita,

I'm so glad you got the fluid you needed and are feeling better now. Isn't it amazing how fast it works?

Happy for you,

:-) Cecilia
