Okay, so I just sechdualed my surgery (colostomy) for the first week in december.  I would like to know some of you alls insights on what I should be doing and what to expect.  If I am not asking to much:

I would love to know where is the best place for the stoma.

Is there a better location for it if I plan to irrigate.  My doctor disscussed this and it seemed like a good idea.

Not to sound dull but will the hospital send be home with supplies that I need or am I supposed to buy them before surgery.

Are the supplies able to be bough at a local market (target/walmart) OR am I going to buy them at a medical supply store OR online.

One more thing, I have read some of you all's posting in regards to belly bands (tub tops) why are theses worn?

Is a tight fighting tank top the same?

Oh sorry, what is a plug.  The doctor mentioned it but I was a bit overwhelmed learning everything else.

If anyone can answer even one or two that will be wonderful!!!!

you et nurse will place your stoma. Its VERy important that you wear your everyday clothes to your appointemnt so it will get placed in the right place.

Supplies will be bought usually online, there may be stores if you live in a larger area. the hosptial will send you home with a very small amount. Go ahead now and contact the different companies and ask for samples. that way you will have them to try when you get home.

I wear a belly band for "fun times" lol to keep the bag out of the way. I also wear it if i am wearing sometihng like a dress of certain materials, and i wear it to drs appts where i would need to remove my clothes, like the girlie dr, lol.
A tank top woudl be the same, but they arent as easy to get aroudn your waist. I just go to the maternity srote in the mall and buy mine.
UC for 8 years, before finally kicking its butt and having a permanent ileostomy April 17 2007!
-I have gone to find myself, if i get back before i return, keep me here-

Thank you.  I wasn' tsure if I needed to wear typical hospital wear or my evreyday clothing to the appt.  Also thank you for the information about the belly band, I never though about the GYN.

there are some pharmacies that carry ostomy supplies, but I think it is easier to do it online. If you have insurance check with who they want you to use, if you don't there are many CHEAPER companies (they WON"T deal with insurance co so they keep their prices LOW).

I don't use a belly band...just a personal thing:) and I do wear regular clothes. When the stoma is placed, the nurse will find the right spot based on your stomach's contours...

Could the plug be a cover since you plan to irrigate? Not sure, I have an ileo:)
