No control over bowel movements--wears diapers and changes them 6-8 times a day.

would this be a candidate for a colostomy?

It would be helpful to have more information: age of patient, underlying health condition, years of incontinence, etc.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

yes i think it wouldbe good to know alittle more.
But if someone is having trouble controlign themselves and its affecting their quality of life, then yes surgery could be an option.
What the reason is would decide whether it woudd be a colostomy, an ileotomy or a j or k pouch
UC for 8 years, before finally kicking its butt and having a permanent ileostomy April 17 2007!

Information important, above comments all important.
I know living thru that is annoying, frustrating, humiliating, hard.
I would try everything else to control it first. Diet, meds, ect.
