I am about 2 months since my surgery and was wondering a couple of things that maybe some of you know.

If I had a Total Colectomy (due to Colonic Inertia problems) where my small intestine was connected to my rectum, do I have an appendix anymore or did that go with everything else that was removed? Forgot to ask my surgeon.

I went back to work and started to have some mild pain around the incision and a generalized ache. I'm thinking that's because I'm still healing up.

This morning, I started to see a little blood as I "finished".  I don't know whether to be concerned or not. I thought I ask my friends here with more experience.

What do you think?

hi Thumper,
i had the colectomy due to CI as well on Aug 16. i think i've read here that with this surgery they remove the appendix too, but i'm honestly not sure. i actually forgot about it too.

my incision also still sore and bothering me, but it's tolarable. i don't know about the ache. i'm in pain only when i cant go.

if you see the bleeding continues, i suggest seeing your surgeon again would be a good idea to find out the source of your bleeding. could be hemorhoids.

how is everything else otherwise? are bms o.k? can you eat normally now?

best wishes!

Hodaya

yep, i'm also almost positive the appendix has to be out too. i sent the question to my surgeon in his forum. i'm still waiting for his answer.

Thanks for responding.

I guess I was suspecting hemorroids, too, which I can take care of myself.  As for my diet, I can eat almost anything at this point. I still stay away from heavy foods, because it makes me uncomfortable, as does overeating. One thing we can say for this procedure is "it's an experience".

One of the things I was pretty happy about, right after the surgery was my weight loss (artificially derived, of course) I was hoping to keep  that weight off (was down to 165 from 185 lbs), but it doesn't look like it. Although I've been really good about working on my treadmill and bike and diet, after 2 months, I've gained 10lbs back.

This is still so much better than before the surgery.  I almost didn't pursue it as an option, but am glad I let my wife and her nurse friends talk me into it.

Be well Hodaya,

Doug (aka Thumper)

Doug,
hey i didn't realize you're a guy.. it's very rare for guys to have CI. having this surgery sure is an experience and a challenge! i'm glad you can eat almost anything. i lost lots of weight too from this surgery, but already am back to my normal weight, i'm 5'4 and weight 115 lbs. as long as i have bms and feel good, then i don't really mind, but for me it seems i still have constipation issues and can't eat most foods. i eat lots of sugarfree chocolate now. it seems the sugar sabstitutes have laxative effects and it helps for now, but i still need to watch what i eat.

even with my on going issues, i still feel better than before the surgery. i don't have the pain i used to have and can eat better and still feel o.k.

i'm really glad the sugery helped you too :) take care!

thought you'd like to know that my surgeon has answered my question i posted in his forum and yes, the appendix is definitely gone, but what the heck, we don't need it anyway, right?
