Hello everyone,  I was just wondering how long it will take for all the swelling in my tummy to go down, I know that the blew up my intestine to see if it leaked,,,,so have had lots of air, swelling, leakage still.  Now some of the itching has began, at the incision site, it's driving me crazy....but I like that kind of crazy.  Not the crazy pain and agony I was in before my surgery, if ya know what I mean.

After being so sick for so long with everything its nice to have a different kind of pain.  At least I know that this pain is only temporary,,,,  Amen...  I am so excited for the next chapter of my life to actually start...when I can go and do and eat and socialize, and get back to living...I am going to be hard pressed to find me when I am well , cuz I plan on doing a lot...especially with my grandkids...gosh the time I have missed.
I missed my grandsons tenth birthday yesterday because it was just to soon to get out, but I will never miss any more...  So I am being positive that this was my cure because I feel so good inside already..........and cant wait for the end result...Have a wonderful evening..Leslie

Hi Leslie - as you know I did not have have a total colectomy but had so much done to me, and so much air pumped into my gut, that I might as well have. I had the post op pain, the swelling. I looked 7 months pregnant. My daughters (3rd and 6th graders then), just kept staring at my stomach. I kept saying - no you are not having a baby sister or brother soon. LOL! I went from a size 12 to a 4 though, everywhere else, except for the stomach. At my various post op checkups my surgeon said it was all normal. At this point I still had the temporary ostomy, near my left ovary, up high. So I couldn't exercise much, beyond brisk walking. Once I had my takedown, the swelling really started to go way down (2 to 3 months later). But he said I could never do sit ups or use nautilus equipment, something about having had 2 abdominal incisions and delivering two babies (vaginally, sorry for that lovely detail). He said I had to really watch how I exercised my stomach area. But, the good news is I found a great way to flatten my tummy and the doc approved - I just sucked in my gut over 100 times a day. I would do them in batches, 15-20 while driving, or blow drying my hair or in the shower. At the end of the day I was up to at least 100 stomach crunches. You pull in your gut as far as you comfortably can, hold it in place for 10 seconds, then release, letting your muscles relax. Of course I must add that I was also petrified to over eat or eat the wrong foods for my touchy gut. So I was eating very small portions and about 4 to 5 meals a day. Combined, I ended up with an almost 6 pack. Without strenuous exercise (in that area of my body). My doctor was amazed and almost didn't believe me, I know in his mind he thought he'd be repairing a hernia on me soon until I showed him I how I flattened my stomach. I like to think I gave him two things to suggest to other patients in my shoes - diet and stomach crunches (for lack of a better word).

Your swelling will go down. You have to give it more time. Ask your doctor if you can do these simple exercises like I did. I think I recorded how many I did each day too, in my food diary. I was diligent about them. Like I said I literally went down to a size 4. I hadn't been that thin since high school. Now I've settled into a true 8. I would like to stay in 8's.

Wow, I would of never thought of that exercise, how cool I will ask him when I go back on the 29th.  You know its funny how we are all different but yet in ways we are a lot alike.  Especially with all the symptioms" depending on what you have" some of us share so many.

Its just sad just how many people are suffering and I am sure that the ones that come on this site is probably just the tip of the iceburg.  You would think that they could do more to aleviate some of the symptoms.  They need to do a lot more research on all of this, but I guess that there just are so many diseases in the world they are doing the best they can.

I had a pretty good night did not have to take a pain pill till 5am, and I had one at 10pm so that was a pretty good stretch for me.  If I sleep all night, I have to play catch up on my pain, because I will wake up just hurting like heck, and it might take all day to get myself comfortable.  I am just wondering how long I will be on the pain meds though, I forgot to ask my doc...well I do well eating some things as long as it is only a few oz at a time, but I do eat frequently, and tons of water and juice.

So this is day 18 post-op I think I am doing ok for this stage in the game.  But my mother came by yesterday for a min and she told me I looked like hell,,,"" thanks mom""  she said go take a shower,  I just did not have a good night the night before so I had no energy and was very nausiated ...........so I told her I would today, and I am working up to it....

Baby steps....wishing you well my friend..

Yeah, mothers are great for that huh? LOL My mom would have said the same exact thing too! I know she would have. Sometimes it's polite to tell a white lie I think.......you feel worse when someone tells you look like he**! Of course you are not going to look like your old self, just look at what you've come through in 18 days!!!! I rest my case.....

After my first surgery, the one that was extremely painful (takedown was a piece of cake to be honest, except for the constant bm's!) I had daily pain for 4 solid weeks. Each evening I'd go to sleep and say a prayer it would subside by morning. I'd swing my legs over to the side of the bed and stand up. And there it was - my new friend, the post-op pain. It always took my breath away too. I'd mutter under my breath, dang, still have pain. So this went on for 4 weeks. By the end of the 4th, the pain was intermittent, not constant. Then it was a dull pain, didn't take my breath away, etc. Finally it was gone by probably the 6th week.

So give yourself more time to be pain free.

But all in all, I'd say you are doing just GREAT!

Take care....
Mary

Mary,   You are so right girl about mothers, I know I have lost more weight probably down to 125 right now I am guessing.  She tells me how gaunt I look and what I shoud eat, well she does not understand that I would love to eat all that is good and healthy for me but right now its trial and error on the foods, and little bits at a time.

Thank you for telling me that I am not the only one with the crazy ma...
