My mom had her Ielostomy reversal 7 weeks ago. In December she had a 4" cancerous tumor reomoved above her rectum. She is 63 and has been pretty much bed ridden since. I'm at a loss of what to do with her because she has absolutely no control over her bowel movements and they are still watery, though they are thickening up. She refuses to were Depends because of the rash and she wants to lie down all the time so that her bowels don't empty as quickly.

Any hope of this ending soon or is this the way it's going to be from now on? She's very discouraged.

Sorry to hear your mother is having such problems this far post op...is she following the BRAT diet (you can google it)? It can thicken up her stool. Are you using Imodium(or it's equivalent?) Once you can get the diarrhea under control the rash will subside. There is a cream that can help...it starts with a C but I cannot remember it...someone will be along with its name.

Welcome to the forum, too.

Is that the marigold cream? Calendula? This is the only thing that has helped heal her rash, but it is so sensitive! I will look into the BRAT diet more.

Thanks!

Your mom needs to exercise her sphincter by doing kegels. It could be that her sphincter is inflammed and is causing her loss of control. I also highly recommend that she visits a rectal physical therapist. They can identify what part of the sphincter needs toning and prescribe direct exercises. If you can't find a rectal PT look for a pelvic floor PT. As for the burning, get a tube of calmoseptine ointment. It's the best for leakage.
