Hi,
Well its two weeks since I came home from take down.  Two weeks 3 days since the take down.
The first week and a half were the hardest.  I was one of those who had butt burn :(.  My girlfriend found a post online by someone who had a jpuch who applied his barrier cream right before he emptied his jpouch.  I was always applying it after.  This simple change helped a lot!  Metamucil wafers have been a GREAT help.  They have now got me passing normal formed BM most of the time.  They have also taken 95% of the acid sting out of a BM which has all but cured the butt burn.  Some people say they have increased gas from this, but I have not noticed.  This may be in part that with such formed BM, I can easily pass gas without having to go to the bathroom - Something that helps cut down on the total number of toilet trips a day.  I have now bought some psyillium husk seed capsules (thats whats in the wafers) to see if they work as well.  Less calories in the capsule.  My concern is that they will break down and release quick enough for me to feel the benefit.
Emotions ran high after a week as I was reminded of what it was like to have UC again.  My girlfriend has been a great sholder to cry on and help me through that rough patch.  Support has been important for me.
So two weeks on and I have driven myself into town and did some shopping for half an hour, driven out to see my mum for a couple of hours and eaten scampi and chips with my girlfriend which was for over 4 hours!  My life is starting to return to normal.  I find when I am out and have to hold it, I have more strength to do so.  when I am at home and the toielt is right there it is easier to give in an empty.
I had really bad spasms after a week which stopped me dead in my tracks.  These have got a lot better over the last 2-3 days and I can now carry on walking etc through one of these spasms.  Hopefuly they will improve still.  I still have no leakage or problems like that.  I have had total control to hold it, even when I really needed to go.

Cathy - really pleased to hear you guys are doing well now.  Time is a friend with this type of thing and week by week I am finding things getting a little better.  I hope you guys will find the same thing.

Congrats. I look forward to having my takedown. I was suppose to have it next week, but the gastrografen came back bad, so I have to wait another 3 months.

That's great! I'm almost two months out from my takedown (Jan. 23rd) and butt burn is one of the things I had been worried about. I'm happy to say that I've not experienced it at all! I'm down to going, oh, maybe 2-6 times a day depending on what I eat. It's SO nice to be able to sleep through the night again and not wake up to an alarm to empty a bag (yes, I set an alarm!), and not to be worried about what clothes I can wear, or be able to be away from a bathroom and not be worried about it. The only issue I've had is my incision site (open surgery) is still draining a bit. I'm changing the dressing once a day, down from two about a week-and-a-half ago. The surgeon wants to take a look if it's still draining in a couple weeks. But other than that, I'm not having problems and am so happy I've done it and that it's working! yeah

06/2002 - diagnosed w/ulcerative colitis
06/02/09 - colectomy w/ileostomy
01/23/10 - ileostomy takedown; ileorectal anastomosis

Great to hear you are doing so well. Dillon also had very little butt burn and is getting better and better. He is having about 8-10 bowel movements a day with 1 during the night. Our doc wants to wait another week or so until we try things like Metamucil....all the docs have different ideas.

Keep us posted,
Cathy ( and Dillon)
