My 3 year old dd has an ostomy and I was wondering what gas felt like for those with ostomies.
Does it hurt, do you feel pain, can anyone really describe the feeling. Does it wake you up in the middle of night from pain?

I'm asking because since my dd received her ostomy (last November) she has not been able to sleep through the night. She wakes up constantly, almost every hour or two, and screams. She won't tell us whats wrong, or if anything hurts. She just screams, sometimes she'll go back to sleep but sometimes this turns into a total tantrum and shes up screaming for an hour.
Our GI chalks it up to gas, and said there really is nothing we can do. I don't think he understands.
I think it might be because she's uncomfortable and I was going to try giving her some benadryl for a few nights to see if that helped her stay sleeping.

We tried to eliminate as much gassy foods as possible for dinner and right before bed, but she's a very picky eater and loves her cheese. She only eats a few things and one of them happens to be Parmesan cheese (she puts it on everything). Could that be the reason.

Also does this sound like a lot of gas to you guys, - we put a clean pouch with a filter on her every night. Some nights I have to "burp" it some nights I don't. But she always wakes up in the morn. with a balloon on her side.

Does anyone have any suggestions??
I apologize if my questions sound silly, I really don't have anyone else to ask.
thank you in advance,

Balloon bag is quite common for the first few months...it gets better over time. However, I have never had any pain associated with the gas. I do not even feel it. Could there be some other cause of the screams, like nightmares? Sorry I could not be more helpful.

when i have bad gas, it hurts, its horrible when i have bad gas.
Get some of that stuff for babies, the drops for gas, for the life of me i cant remember what its called, but give her a little of that in the morning, in the middle of the day and at night, it will help stop her from getting gas.
Like Jen said, balloon bag is common, it will go away some, i still have it occasionally, depending on what i eat.
Why are you putting on a new bag everynight?
And as for the waking up thing, when my little boy was about 3 he would wake up and just scream and run through the house manic, then he would calm down and go to sleep. Apparently its common for children to have "night terrors" about that age. I have heard quite a few other parents say their kids did that too. I found there was absolutley nothing to do about, so i just left him alone and let it run out, because i found that if i tried to calm him during one of those fits, it made it worse.

Thank you,

I didn't believe it was gas causing her to scream, but I just wanted to be reassured. I never thought to try those baby gas drops (mylicon). thank you!!
I change the bag every night so she has a new bag with a new filter. The Hollister rep told me that the filter will not last all day so I switch to a new one at night to avoid the bag getting too full of gas. Once in a while my daughter will drop on her belly in her sleep and her bag actually popped and poop leaked all over my bed. My insurance actually pays for two bags a day...I thought that was normal??

I am also trying to find a child psychologist b/c I think she's having nightmares from the two months we were in the hospital. I am hoping that will help her express what she is feeling.

thank you again for your responses.

does he have an ileo? if so,, you dont need to change the bag all the time. the filter wont work at night regardles, because the poo gets clogged up around it and then when she wakes up and gets moving it will move off. thats not the best way to explain it but its the best i could do, lol.
Now if she has a colo, then changing the bag is normal.
get those pads that you put under babies when they are potty training, sew a bed sheet on top of them, so they are soft, and put one under her when she sleeps, that way if she has an accident, you only change that, not the whole bed.
I sleep on one of those everynight.
You could even try doing some kind of fun sheet for her, like dora or something, so she would think it was cool.

I just wanted to thank summerstorm for the wonderful of advice of giving my daughter those mylicon drops...they worked!! We've been giving it to her right before bed every night, if we miss a night then she wakes up constantly saying her belly hurts. Also the balloon bag only happens once in a while now. I guess as we're approaching a year things are just getting a littler easier every day.

I still change the bag before bed though, since during the day she wears a smaller pouch with no filter. It's a little less obvious under her clothes since her body is so small. I'm sure as she grows she can start wearing the bigger pouch with the filter during the day too.

No matter what kind of day you are having, take five minutes to sing loudly and dance like a fool!
