Hello All – I’m not a regular on this site, but I do log in every now and then to read the posts.  I have found this forum to be such an amazing wealth of info/support/entertainment for ostomates – new/veteran/prospective.  So, on that note, I just had to share this with you . . .

Last night I went to a birthday party where they served a delicious red velvet cake – yum!  I had a piece(Ok, I had 2), drank a little wine, came home and didn’t think much of it  . . . until this morning when my bag was full of BRIGHT RED liquid.  My first thought was I was bleeding to death and for a split second I started to panic, until I remembered the cake - then I laughed out loud J  Then I remembered the same thing happened a few years ago after I ate beet salad too.  Guess red stuff just doesn’t digest well.  Anyone else have stories that involve funky colors?

BTW – speaking of birthdays.  Tomorrow (4/17) is the 3rd anniversary of my ileostomy surgery.  Happy Birthday Lilly !!  (the name I gave my stoma)

Decades ago I used to make a red velvet cake from scratch. I can see how it would turn your stool red! LOL

Your post reminded me of the time I ate a bowl full of fresh blueberries. My output was an army green and very watery. My colon surgeon said to avoid blueberries in the future. Even though my ostomy was reversed I still avoid them (because now I have severe IBS like symptoms from the bottom of my colon being removed, what fun.....).

That old saying "we are what we eat"? So true, so true.....

Congrats on your 3 year "Lilly" anniversary!

I've been drinking crystal light fruit punch and it's SUPER RED and it's been staining everything. This morning I had bright red poo as well and I'm literally on the verge of tears because I can't decide if it's the crystal light or my Crohn's coming back in my small intestine...I just tapered my pred yesterday so I'm really scared....hopefully it's just the dye. :/

Lily! Today is my new birthday too! I'm three too! thats pretty cool.
And as for the red velvet cake, i had the same thing happen to me, that was the first thing i ate that did that, and i freaked! I was ready to go to the hospital.

stephanie-its probably the fruit punch, esp if its staining stuff, like the toilet bowl, or the tip of your pouch.
Another thing that can happen to cause blood, is if you hit your stoma, you may not even notice that you did it and then have blood.

Blue dye for me makes my output bright green and it smells soooo awful, its like knock you down and die smell!

Blue dye makes bright green output - lol. Who knew!!!!

Last bowl full of blueberries I ever ate and that was 11 years ago. Now I might have 2 or 3 total, in a fruit salad.

Happy Birthday to you and Summer! yeah

The only color story I can think of is when I had a blockage a few years ago and had to have an NG tube put in. I wasn't allowed to eat for a week and was starving, so I had my hubby sneak in some Life Savers. The red ones are my favorite, so I sucked on a couple of those, and my nurse freaked out when she walked into my room and saw bright red stuff coming out of my NG tube! I confessed, and she said it was fine, but at first, she thought I was bleeding.
Dx'd Crohn's in '99 at age 28. Proctocolectomy and permanent ileostomy in '06.

After reading this thread, it makes total sense why we're instructed not to consume anything with red dye, the day of a liquid diet/bowel prep!

My color provblem  comes  not from colostomu, I recently had to have a supra pubic catherization.  I was plagued by severe bladder spasms.  The Doctor  [rescribed a medication to ease them.  It turned my urine bright orange.   When I sleep I generally cross my ankles and one bright day some how I kicked open the leg bag valve and spray painted half of my white comfortor orange and turned a large of my blue carpeting a bilious shade of green.

LOL at your responses! You know, I would probably never admit this to anyone that didn't have an ostomy or didn't "get it", but sometimes I am just fascinated by my stoma and the poo output. I know this may sound a little disgusting, but I'm a very curious sort of person and thankfully I'm not easily grossed out. Even after 3 years, it's still so very interesting to me to actually see how our body processes and digests various food & liquids. The human body is truly amazing.

Summerstorm – WOW . . . it’s SO cool that we share the same "birthday"!! :-) I don't know about you, but I can hardly believe it's been 3 years?!! The time has flown by.

A little bit about me: I was diagnosed with UC in '77 and was a VERY sick teenager and young adult. I was treated with high doses of pred and aszulfadine. Back then, the drugs of choice today weren’t available yet. I was in and out of the hospital and there were some close calls, but my Dr. was determined to spare me from ostomy surgery. Thankfully, I went into remission in my mid twenties and managed to live a fairly normal life for the last 20 or so years – there were a few ups & downs but no major flares or drugs. In March ‘07, my world was turned upside down when they found High Grade Dysplasia during a colonoscopy, so on 4/17/07 I had what was supposed to be a 1-step J pouch procedure. Long story short, during the surgery there were complications and I ended up with a Barbie butt and a new lifelong friend named "Lilly" (my stoma). Definitely not what I was expecting, but I am cancer free and grateful that it was caught in time. I'm actually a little relieved that the Jpouch didn't work - sounds like there is greater opportunity for so many other issues and ongoing problems. All things considered, I'm perfectly happy with the way things worked out.

Wishing you all good health!!

LOL i have no idea what caused that stuff! Well i did eat an entire fresh pineapple yesterday...and a bag of popcorn for dinner.
I really think it was the B150 pill, it makes my pee yellow.
