I'm getting a colonoscopy next week to try and determine if I do in fact have UC or if i've been misdiagnosed for 4 years and instead have Chron's. My dr's instructions were not ostomy specific and I was wondering if any of the other colostomates on here had some info for me. (I am planning on calling the doc too) I was wondering if I will have to take my appliance off to do the procedure and also if I should be doing the regular miralax prep. I'm afraid my bag will fill up too fast for me to empty it and blow out. I've heard some people just do enemas in their stoma. Also, I'm getting my rectum scoped while I'm under as well since i still have mucous and blood from it. No one told me to do anything with it enema wise which seems odd to me. Thoughts? Comments? Thanks!

-Now IBD is indeterminate tests will be done after healing if still UC J-pouch surgery, if Chron's take down of colostomy

How much of your large intestine is left? From what I know you don't get a colonoscopy once you lose most of your large intestine - you'd get a sigmoidoscopy. Most likely just needing to utilize a few enemas.

Last colonoscopy I had was a piece of cake! My doc just went up through the bag so I didn't need to take it off. I WAS surprised that I had to do the same prep work though :-(.

I had a colonoscopy a few months ago. I have a sigmoid colostomy so I used my irrigation sleeve while doing the prep. I only had to take the biscodyl (or whatever they're called) pills before I saw output. I still drank about 2 cups of the half-litely though.

For the procedure itself, I wear a two piece so I just removed the bag and they were able to go through the stoma with the faceplate on. I was under and remember very little except starting to come out of it at the end and having people pressing on my belly. It didn't hurt at all, just felt a little weird! It was really easy, though. Especially compared to scopes before my surgery.

thanks for the replies! I finally got a call back from my doctor's office and they still want me to do the regular prep, but I can stop drinking the stuff as soon as my output is clear but still a bit yellow. Plus they said I could start it earlier than 5, since i was worried about having a blowout overnight since there's no more urge waking me up. But i also found out i need to do two enemas because my rectum is getting scoped as well. Never done and enema before and not looking forward to it.

I have a "rectal stump" and when I get my annual scoping, I just have to do one enema. They usually come pre-lubed and I just lay on the floor on my side and insert and squeeze in as much of the enema as I can. I was scared the first time I ever did one but it wasn't so bad. Not compared to all the other ways I've been tampered with!
Good luck with your prep!!!
Crohn's since 1990. Bowel resection few years later then sub total colectomy / ileostomy in 1996. Ileostomy reversed in 2000. I did real well on Remicade when I flared up a couple years after the reversal. After Remicade failed me, I had ileostomy surgery AGAIN Feb 2008. Currently working towards remission once again. One day at a time!
