Am 11 days post ileostomy surgery and doing pretty well. I had dysmotility of my colon and now have an end ileo (had a temp loop last year).

I'm really not moaning because I'm feeling SO much better.. but just struggling a bit with indigestion, wind and burping.. something I've NEVER had before and didn't when I had the loop ileo.

Is it just early days and this will settle? or do you think this is a new symptom I'll have to live with. I'm experimenting with various foods etc and it seems to be there pretty much all the time regardless of what I eat.

Is it ok to take indigestion remedies?

Thanks Sarah x

Yep Simethicone and ginger are fine. I have the indigestion too. Never knew loop ileos were easier on the digestion as so many people get peristomal hernias and other issues with the loops. Rosemary

It will settle its just normal. I always found it helpful to take 2 gasx in the morning then 2 more midday to kind of keep the gas from starting

Hi Ironmum, from memory you are in UK. Simethicone is available here but where I live the only way to buy it is in the form of Windeze tablets/capsules, look in the indigestion aisle of chemist. As I now take it three times a day (because the immodium I need to take to slow bowel down makes things a bit gassy) I have had my GP put onto prescription and they write it up for simethicone and I get given windeze.

I usually end up clearing out my local chemist as my repeat prescription is for 5 weeks worth of tablets. Oh, by the way they are not cheap either, can get them cheaper online but now you qualify for free prescriptions and hopefully you have a good GP they should prescribe them.

11 day or so is still pretty early and your body is still recovering from surgery. Let your doctor know and maybe they can give you a prescription for something...but personally, I'd let them make the call. Just a thought, did you have an NG Tube during your stay? That can cause temporary irritation.

thank you all :-) great advice as always. E Mom no I didn't have an NG tube (thank god) - I'm hoping it's just my body getting used to a new system and way of working.

I think I'll mention it to my nurse as it's kind of irritating though and perhaps they'll prescribe something.

Today I'm struggling more with thick output again and a very sore stoma where there seems to be a blockage behind.. just glugged a bit of prune juice in the hope of getting things moving! ggrrrrr. Frustrating.

Its' only 2 weeks tomorrow, so I know I'm being impatient, but just trying to work out what makes things better or worse.
