After much thought, many consultations, and much research I have decided to get the ileostomy. After 14 years of crohn's, colon cancer, and poop accidents I'm ready to go. I will be having the rectum removed as well so this is permanent and I am at peace with the decision. I am a firm believer in acidophyllis and omega 3 fish oil. I know yogurt is good for the ostomy patient. Does anyone else take these supplements? Also, can anyone suggest a vitamin that would be absorbed by the iliostomy patient. Would liquid vitamins make a difference? Wish me luck on January 23rd. eyes eyes

All the best for the 23rd artist. That is the day that my stoma will be 3 years old. I didnt have my rectum removed until march last year though. I hope that everything goes as well for you as it did for me. I healed very quicky from both surgerys and the second surgery amazed me because I didnt hardly feel a thing from "underneath"

As for the supplements, I work in a health shop, but I am hopeless when it comes to taking supplements for myself. I am always telling myself that it would be good for me to take the Acidophilus but I always forget to take them. I do eat natural yoghurt though and so far so good. I did take an Iron supplement for a while after my second surgery because my levels were a bit low. I like Spatone liquid 100% natural,it put my iron levels up realy quickly.

If you are looking for a multi vitamin and mineral tablet that will absorb well,I suggest that you avoid the time release type because you might find it doesnt have time to absorb before you expel it into the bag.

I will look out for you when you feel up to posting again after your surgery.

All the best.

Sue

I've had my permanent ileostomy for 16+ years.  I had my rectum removed also.  I take regular vitamins and don't have any trouble with absorbing them.  I take the vitamins in regular tablet form and get the stuff from Walmart.  I had a bout with anemia 12 years ago and was put on Ferro Sequel tablets and that took care of the anemia.  So I do know that the tablets are being absorbed.
I wish you the best of luck with your surgery.  I don't regret having the surgery and it gave me my life back.  It sounds like you took a lot of time to really think this out so I'm sure you will be hapy you did it also.  We'll be waiting to hear from you after your recovery.

Hello, again!  I wanted to share this story about when I was trying to decide as to whether or not to have the surgery.  I was speaking to a wonderful woman on the phone who was sharing her surgery experience.  She was telling me about where they would form the stoma.  She went on to say that her stoma was lower because it interfered with the strap for her artificial leg!  Wellll, that put everything in perspective for me!  I realized how truly blessed I was!  And, as I said previously, I have never regretted having the surgery.
