I was in the pre-op area today, IV's running when the surgeon came in, took one look at my ileostomy bag and said that I had not done the appropriate pre-op procedures. I showed him my instructions from his office and assured him that I had done exactly as told. Regardless. he said the small intestine had not been cleaned out and he was not comfortable doing the surgery.  I was sent home and told to contact his office to reschedule.

He is leaving for vacation early next week and his only opening is next Monday. He said he would not do this surgery and then leave town because he does not expect it to be a quick or simple procedure due to the original surgery being so difficult and life threatening. As a nurse, I really can't argue with his reasons but it doesn't stop me from being very upset.

I will not be out of work until mid to late August and I've already been out for nearly 7 weeks. Thankfully the people at hospice are very understanding and simply say "you have to take care of yourself Cheryl" and assure me that my job is safe.

Just wanted to vent I guess. It's been a very upsetting day and evening.

How frustrating for you - I am looking forward to my reversal next Wednesday - I go into hospital Tuesday and have been given NO instructions to do any preparation! I live in Belgium so maybe the procedures are different, but I would appreciate a run down of what you were asked to do - I will also try and call the hospital and ask if I should be making any preparation.

I hope you manage to get your op as soon as he is back from vacation - make sure you have a date and are set to go next time. Seems unfair to me that you have to wait after following the instructions, but hang in there and try to relax before the next op. It is good that your work supports you - quite right too, look after no. 1!

Every surgeon's pre-op procedures are different.  For my reversal surgery the only requirement was no food after midnight the night before surgery.  Some surgeons require much longer periods of fasting.  I am sorry about your cancellation.  It's very hard to mentally and emotionally prepare for something like this and then not have it done.

Chertuc,  I can understand your frustration as this whole thing seems to be an ongoing process.  It is often at times hard to dream of the day when the bag will be gone, the take down done and everything is flowing about as normally as it can for our type of folks.  The best I can say is hang in there and you will get through this.  Kudo's however to your Doctor for wanting to take the safest approach instead of just throwing caution to the wind and assembly lining the whole thing.  That and being around in town after the operation should any complications occur.  You'll get there, it's like you said, sometimes you need to vent and those around you don't understand.  That's why I thank God for this website and others like it.  God bless.  Phil

Gillian,
I was told nothing after midnight on the night before the surgery so that's what I did. In pre-op the next day, the surgeon said I was to have taken 2 bottles of magnesium citrate and a third bottle if the stool wasn't clear after the first two bottles. The instructions from his office did not say any of this so my surgery was postponed for over three weeks. It's extremely frustrating. I hope all goes well with your reversal. Please let me know. I'm very nervous and anxious about my upcoming surgery.

Thanks Cheryl - I can't believe it - my surgeon's office just called me and said they have postponed MY op until 14 July (was supposed to be 28th June)! I know just how you feel - I have been counting the days and getting more and more fidgety and now feel incredibly flat and disappointed. At least I have a date though - you must make sure you get yours booked up asap. Stay in touch and who knows we could end up the same date! Thanks for the prep info - I am booked in the day before the op so I guess they make sure you don't eat and what ever else they need. Good luck!

At least you got the call before you were on a strether in the pre-op area! I had IV's running and was ready to go into surgery when he came in and canelled it.

As for another date, it seems we're going on the same day! They've rescheduled it for July 14! Must be a good day for reversals, right?
