Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and was thrilled to have found it. I just recently found out why I have so much abdominal pain (especially left-sided) and bloatedness. The colorectal surgeon says I have colonic inertia. I did the transit test and it came back 21/24. I will find out the results of my defecography tomorrow (this is the second time I have done this humiliating x-ray!) I am so terrified because I've had abdominal surgery before.

The same surgeon had done total pelvic mesh repair on me 5 years ago and I have had left sided pain ever since and my bowels have gotten slower and slower. I also have fibromyalgia and IBS-C and was wondering if anyone else had these issues to deal with prior to surgery. Were you in alot of pain post surgery? Did the fibro continue or was there relief? I'm in so much pain right now I could scream. I had to quit the meds (vicodin and zanax for the fibro) to make sure they are not causing the problem. So when I see the doc tomorrow, hopefully I'll be able to maintain my calm disposure skull

I'll post tomorrow after my doc's visit.
Just want to,

Hi . I have fibro and ibs, I just had my surgery 3 weeks ago and it feels like I just had it. The fibro in the hospital hurt alot as did a tailbone broken a few years ago. I had some complications after surgery with vomiting severly bile etc. and needed an ng tube. I am home now for almost a week and only have pain slightly around the incision which was done open and not small incision. I am going to the bathroom not very  much and lost 33 pounds in three weeks. I hope I have given you some help. I am so grateful for the surgery and my new life.

Hi enpointe and welcome,
I'm so glad you wrote back. Did they diagnose you as having colonic inertia also? Did they say what they thought caused it? I can't seem to get a straight answer. I was supposed to have my surgery this past Monday but I cancelled and went for a second opinion. Seems both docs agree that the colon is the problem. Do you have about a 10 inch incision on your stomach? That is what they told me. I am going to be scheduled for surgery in Dec or Jan. I think I'm ready now. It really encourages me to know that you are doing well and that you are grateful for doing it. I know how you feel about the complications after surgery...been there and done that. They should paste a big sign to our foreheads that say 'Fibromites are always the exception, and never the rule!' I finally figured out to bring a copy of 'Fibromyalgia and elective surgery' from http://www.myalgia.com/index_post.html with me for the anesthesiologist and for the surgeon. This has helped with the last couple of surgeries. Are you on a colostomy bag or did they sew your sm intestine to your rectum (anastomosis)? I will pray for your recovery that it will be quick and that your body will mend like it should...eventually being painfree!
Take care

BTW check out ostomies/total colectomy Part 12, there is tons of info there but not so much on fibro, please keep in touch and let me know your progress, okay? Who are you seeing for your fibro right now (rhemy, neuro, or GP) and do they have you on any type of meds?
