Is there a cure for slow transit constipation...

my consultant says that i have to use strong laxatives to manage my bowel problem, which by the way started 8 years ago, and is chronic IBS. He said the drastic option would be to have a subtotal colectomy, but it would be extreme for someone my age, and that only 60% of people are better afterwards.  confused
 
however as you will see from another thread of mine, i have always been regular, whatever that means. 
 
is there a way around all this, as diet has never helped me, and bulking laxatives make my gut huge and uncomfortable...
