i'm noticing some undigested food in my output. things like rice, tomatos, carrots, soft candy. before my surgery these foods were well digested. is this normal with an ileostomy, to have some undigested food come through like that? yesturday for example i had two cups of rice, and i'd say 1/16 cup of it came out undigested...i'm just concerned about possible blockages!!

Actually those foods mentioned are never fully digested it's just that in normal stool they are hidden. Your body has digested the nutrients from those foods, what you are passing is the fiberous non-digestable portions of those foods. It sounds like food is moving through you so I wouldn't be concerned about blockages. For me, in my first year of recovery, I had a partial blockage due to oranges that I did not chew well. As long as you are chewing your food well and it's in smaller portions, you should be okay. A partial obstruction or two in the first year is to be expected. Just know the symptoms and how to deal with one and you should be fine. Suffering a PO is not an indicator of future problems.

Hi matt, im 17 i had my ileostomy surgery on the 7th march 2007 due to severe UC. mines ony temporary and it might seem weird but i find having a stoma is interesting and the output. eating some things like strawberry jelly makes it red and scares the doctor lol. see what colours u can make the output by what you eat and drink. like coloured sports drinks. shoudnt worry about getting blockage, just chew your food well.
