i have been reading posts here for a while and everyone is so helpful.i'm not so great with computers but here it goes.my son (age 20)just got diagnosed with colonic inertia.he was fine his entire life (normal bm's)then last year around sept.he became very constipated.i tried to treat him for it with miralax,(i take it for ibs )helped a little.he also had some anal leakage which his friends commented on.(said he had an odor)he is constantly checking himself for it.has anyone here with colonic inertia exprienced this?he has had all the test including sitz marker (all rings throughout colon on day 5)surgeon has him on stool softner 2x day, lactulose 2tbsp 2x day.he has a bm between 2-4 times a week.mag citrate when needed.enemas every other week.has anyone experienced incomplete bm's (son says he has to wipe alot to get clean)the surgeon said if this quit working surgery would be next step.he also told me about a woman who gave birth and afterwards her colon stopped working for about a year then she got better.is that possible?i am so confused about this.some posts that i have read(no bm with laxatives,no bm with high volume enemas)he's not there yet but his life has stopped because of this.thanks for giving me a place to find out more and learn about this .

I hope your son finds relief.  I was diagnosed with colonic inertia in 2002.  I have never heard of anal leakage or an odor...maybe he should get a second opinion on that.  How has the laxative/enema regimen working?  I am up to 4 enemas every other day...hot water bag enemas.  Citrate of Magnesium doesn't work for me anymore.  I am considering the total colectomy.  I am only 26 and am worried about it.  I have a daughter who is only 10mths. My constipation has gotten worse since i had here.  Keep me posted on your son.

I'm going to go through your questions one at a time. For me, I've never had any kind of leakage. Could it have been that he thought he was passing gas and wasn't? If I'm reading your post correctly, if he takes the stool softener and laculose he has between 2 and 4 BM's a week? If that's the case, I think that's great! The stool softener and lactulose can be taken longterm and will hopefully continue working for him. Also, if he's like the normal teenager, he probably doesn't get enough water. Another thing you might want to try is FiberSure or something similar. Most kids don't eat enough fiber and that might help him without making his BM's too loose.

Breast Cancer at 36. Diagnosed in 2000. Bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction.
Status post colon resection, but now heading towards a total colectomy in September.
Son diagnosed with Crohn's at 17 (now 20). Taking Asacol and 6MP with Prednisone and Rowasa added during flareups.
