HAS anyone ever had chronic constipation and still cleared a sitz marker test. All of you seem to have done it differently than I did and I am think I may want to repeat the test. I did not do an enema and then three days later take the pill. I took my normal laxatives the night before I took the pill, then i had a x-ray on day 5 not three x-rays. What are your opinions on this?

I have chronic constipation and I did the test. However, you cannot take laxatives for the exam. I begged my Dr not to make me do the test because if I cannot take laxatives then I cannot eat. Anyway, he made me take the test anyway. I never ate one bite of food for the test. I stayed in bed and slept as much as I could on the weekend so I would not have to think about food. When I was awake, I stayed very busy so I was not focused on being hungry. On day four I went in for my X-ray and there were very few markers still present in my system. I explained to my Dr that this test was not reliable because I could not eat. I was so distended on day 3 of the test that I did drink a 1/2 bottle of Citrate of Magnesium. I am sure that 1/2 bottle is what cleaned out my system (that and the fact that there was not any food in my system). Normally, you have an X-Ray on days 4,5, and 7. Since most of my markers were gone by day four, I did not have to return.

You're not supposed to take anything at all the day before the test. They had me do my normal magnesium citrate (or whatever works for you) to clean out on Friday. I started the test on Monday. Took the pill and had an x-ray at three and six hours. Then I just went in daily for an x-ray in the morning. At the end of the test (day eight) I had 19 markers remaining.

They didn't tell me TO do a laxative before the tests, they only told me not to do a laxative while on the tests. So to let them know just how bad it is I've been eating and not taking a laxative since Thursday. I took my marker pill today, sunday. and will go for my first xray tomorrow. Haven't been to the bathroom since last Sunday so I'm sure I'm pretty backed up.

Can't image how any markers are gonna get thru that!

Me

That's perfect the way you're doing it. If you have a totally cleaned out colon at the beginning of the test, there is nothing to hold them back. They wanted me to have a couple days worth of stool before starting the test, so the way you're doing it this time will give more accurate results. Good luck to you!
