In July, my stoma had it's 23rd BD! Congrats to you for 38!!! Have you ever had any problems with your stoma? Is it the same one they made at your original surgery?

Congrats on your 23rd and kudos to all on this list. Yes it is the original. I think I've had a much easier time than many of you! No problems - just starting to get some skin irritation from the tape recently, but that's manageable. Keep in mind that when I started, pouches were made of rubber and needed surgical cement to attach and solvent to remove. The closest thing to skin barriers were karaya rings which didn't work well. We've come a long way!!! I still downhill ski and golf, and travel extensively, but had to give up backpacking and scuba due to back problems. I have 2 children in college, have been married 33 years, have a very fulfilling and busy professional career, and have never let my stoma interfere with living. Best wishes to all on this list!

lp,
What are you going to do to celebrate? Does your stoma have a favorite food? Maybe you can treat yourself to your favorite dinner.

No celebration - I just happened to remember today. I rarely think about it - after so many years (and few problems) I am too busy to think abot it! My sense of self is comprised of my relationships, accomplishments and experiences - having an ileostomy is a very minor part of the total me. It isn't a major component of my identity - but then I've had nearly 40 years to come to terms with it and gain a long term perspective. I wasn't always this accepting or wise - about many things! Best wishes to all of you as you make your way through life. It's the only life you get and my philosophy has been never to let having a stoma keep me from living life (with all the joys and sorrows) to the fullest. That's what works for me.

Hi SToma-Pro. This thread is from 9 years ago (2007) so LP probably isn't around anymore to answer your question.

I've had my ileostomy for 39 years now however I think you must have a colostomy? as ileostomies don't usually 'pancake' as the output is too pasty/liquidy so I can't help you with that one.
Ileostomy for 39 years due to UC. I had my surgery at 10 years of age.
