Hi everyone. It was suggested that I follow a gluten free diet for several weeks to see if my allergy symptoms lessen. My allergist feels I have an undiagnosed food allergy.  It has been 2 weeks without gluten, I can't say that I feel any better, and the last two/three days I have had stomach issues.

Can you give me some examples of what happens to you (symptoms) should you accidentally (or not so accidentally) ingest gluten?

Thanks in advance!

If I get into gluten I get very bloated feeling, very gassy, and my stomach hurts right where your ribs come together just above your stomach. I also hurt behind my belly button.  All of this usually starts within 1 hour of eating gluten and can last for up to 2 days. When I was diagonsed with Celiac Disease I felt better within just a couple of days without gluten. But everyone is different.  Hope this helps you.

I have not felt any different going gluten free. My main complaints are unrelenting sinus congestion, fatigue and joint pain. So, in a little self test, I had one slice of regular pizza on Friday. I couldn't help it, it was there, ready and I wanted it. I think it was about 8pm. Since Saturday morning I have had heartburn (unresponsive to meds, which is just strange) and on and off gassiness and pain, right in the middle of my stomach, exactly where you described. If I ate, it got slightly better, than back to worse. I actually ate very little all weekend, yet the scale says I gained 3 pounds. It reached it's peak yesterday, kept me awake, and now I seem to be heading backwards from the worst, getting a little better every few hours.

I have no idea if it was a stomach bug, or what I ate on Friday. It seems to have lingered a bit longer than either of those things should, so I am at a loss. I guess it will be a while before I 'experiment' again. Time to find a pizza substitute...it's the ONE thing I MISS... :)

Is it common to go gluten free, and THEN notice a severe reaction that you didn't have before - when you ate it every day? It seems so out of left field, yet I know what I did on Friday...

There are so many different symptoms for when you get into gluten. But from what you described, it is exactly what happens to me.  Before I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease I had been sick with vomitting/diarhea for about 8 weeks.  When that finally stopped, everytime I ate my stomach would burn so bad, and nothing would help. Not even prescription meds.  I put up with it for about 3 months and finally couldn't take it anymore so I went back to the gastro dr and described my symptoms to him and to my surprise he said he thought I had Celiac.  I was expecting him to say I had an ulcer. But since none of the antacids were working he didn't think it was an ulcer.

If I get into gluten now my symptoms are much worse than they were during that 3 months before I was diagnosed.  Even today I did something stupid that got me into gluten.  My daughter got an order of crazy bread from Little Ceasars and she also had a fountain drink.  I had a fountain drink as well, in the same type of cup.  When we got home we carried in our drinks, then carried in the groceries.  We didn't know whose cup was whose. I drink diet, she doesnt'. So without thinking I took a drink from one of the cups.  It was hers.  But it also had gluten all over the straw from her drinking while she was eating the crazy bread.  My stomach has hurt ever since.

It may take you longer than just a couple weeks to notice a difference.  You may also have a problem with milk/dairy or other things.  Several months into doing gluten free I had to stop drinking milk and eating ice cream. It caused major stomach upset. So you may try that as well.

Hope you start feeling better soon.

seeking some thoughts...I had been tested for celiac by a blood test, Celiac planel, which came back narmal.  Two years ago I had an endoscopy which came back normal, with the exception of a note by the pathologist , that my gastro dr. didn't metion, of a "pathchy area of increased intraepithelial lymphocytosis, suggestive of mild or very early celiac disease, clinical correlation is suggested".  Because the gastro dr. didn't mention this it was never considered.  Now, two years later in looking up records I found this prior note by the pathologist.  I have continued to have bad stomache distress and wonder if there is a definitive test that can be done to either confirm this finding of celiac or negate it as it previously wasn't even noted by dr. Thanks. :-)
