Hello all, so I have wrote on some of the other forums in here about RA. So I had a bit of a break down this passed weekend since I have felt like crap for the passed year with no answers other that take this pain pill and this one. So I started researching and going over all of my symptoms and wonder if I actually have a gluten intolerance.. My symptoms are back, neck pain ALL the time, acidy stomach, gas, bloating, acid reflux, headaches and hair loss.. Now I have been tested for RA, lupus, and kidney issues. My blood work for RA comes back positive but they say my symptoms don't match. I have a lot of inflammation into body according to my blood work. They tested me for gallbladder problems but that too was negative. So not sure if in actuality they are missing/myself are missing something. There is no reason someone should be in pain for that long. Any suggestions? TIA

You can certainly try a gluten free diet and see if it works. The best test would be to have an upper endoscopy so a GI can take a biopsy of your digestive tract and look for evidence of celiac disease. Even if you don't have celiac disease, though, you could still have an intolerance to gluten.

Have you seen a gastroenterologist (GI)?

I have not seen a GI dr yet. I think it's just a gluten intolerance. But it is just a thought. I see a new RA dr on Friday but they never seem to think I have anything they can help me with cuz my symptoms don't match. I take Percocet and tramadol now daily for the pain and it sucks cuz I don't want to live on pain meds..

The pain meds are probably making things worse as they affect your digestive process. Make an appointment with a GI.

You know I didn't think of that. Now I know it is too soon to tell cuz I just started no gluten this passed weekend, but I actually felt pretty good yesterday and only took 2 perc and 2 tram all day, that is HUGE since I was taking 3 & 4 a day plus Advil.. I have kaiser so I will talk w my dr to see if he can send me to a GI dr. Thanks for your help!

How often are you taking Advil? That can also cause stomach and bowel problems.

I have an inflammatory bowel disease and so I am not supposed to take meds like Advil (any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory can aggravate bowel disease) and narcotic pain meds make me terribly nauseated. So I just use tylenol for my headaches. I've been getting migraines for the past couple of years, but between tylenol and caffeine and sleep I've managed to avoid Advil and naproxen to treat these headaches. I think you need to try and stay away from these pain meds and that may resolve your stomach problems.

But good job on trying a gluten free diet. You'll need about 3 weeks totally gluten free to get a good idea of what's what.

I only take it about 3 times a week now, I was taking it more. But wasn't tolerating the prescription of 800mg anymore so I was just doing 2-3 over the counter.. Now I have talked to my dr about stomach issues and he has said just take over the counter acid reducer. Well it got really bad one weekend and I had a phone appt w a dr and she prescribed a medication.. I started it and had the side effects so stopped now started again cuz having more issues. I make sure I eat a full meal w the pain meds. I will make sure to get a referral to GI dr.

Have you been tested for Fibromyalgia, cause thats what it sounds like to me? I have the same all over, don't match symptoms but I have spinal issues too, which according to my neurologist and my RA don't account for more than half my symptoms. The others are totally right about the pain meds, I've been on Tramadol or tylenol and IBU for 3-4 yrs with occasional narcotics cause of surgeries and dental work and yes I'm allergic to gluten, wheat and lactose and my insides are shot, I have to take a pill for my stomach and 3 to go to the bathroom. 2 of those are Probiotics suggested by my Gastro. Hang in there, I've gotten as much help here as I have out there, even if its just a reminder that I'm not alone.

Its the "everything else" test, thats how they diagnose Fibro, they rule out "everything else," then they diagnose you with Fibro. :)

Got ya.. Well my first RA dr was just judging a book by its cover and I finally got tired of her not listening to me.. Then she tried to back peddle after she saw my test results and was like "oh there is really something wrong" and at that time I was in soooo much pain I was in the er a lot!! Fingers crossed this new dr actually helps me figure it all out :)
