OK, so I had the scope on Friday & I have not had a bm since the prep! Nothing but bloody mucous, the usual. I feel like I have to go, but when I sit, nothing happens... is this normal?!?!? It's driving me crazy- not very comfortable. Not painful, but I just want to go. Plus I now when I do go, it'll be total bathroom backlash. Does it usually take a couple days to get things "going" again after a colonoscopy?

I normally have 24 hours of no BM's after a scope. The feeling of needing to go when you don't is called tenesmus and is caused by rectal inflammation. I see that you're not on any rectal drugs. You may want to check with your doctor about a prescription for Rowasa or some rectal steroids to ease that inflammation.

This is normal and you might not be constipated.  The colon holds waste up to 36 hours since a previous meal.  Since you completely emptied your colon for an exam it's going to take a few days to get it filled again.

I got through my last colonoscopy pain with a whole lot of fennel tea--it helps absorb all the gass that they pump into you. Maybe that could help? Good luck, LB

I didn't have a BM for a couple days after my last c-scope. It was actually a nice break for me, but I didn't have the tenesmus feeling, either. That sucks you're having blood and mucous still. Can you try rectal meds, like Judy suggested?

It's not so much tenesmus- believe me, I DO know what that feels like!!!! I just feel sort of full, like I have waste inside but it's not going anywhere. ALthough everyone assures me this is normal, that it takes a couple days for your body to adjust, & your colon to fill up again. And actually, the blood & mucous occur when I try to have a bm, I haven't really felt the urge to have one that much. I'll give it a couple days- if nothing, I'll call the doctor. I don't really want any more meds- I know the rectal meds are no big deal, but I just don't want 'em. It's not bad enough to justify the process of getting them right now. My big worry is that when I do finally have to have a bm, it'll be while I'm out somewhere driving or shopping or some other terrible place!

That happened to me on my last scope but I didn't go to the bathroom for 4 days. I was starting to hurt so I called the doctor and he said to use Miralax. I used it once and I was able to get back on track. But of course I was in remission when I had it and I had no other things going on.

I didn't go for 3 WEEKS after my scope. And it was 3 WEEKs before the scope...I was so glad for the prep! I think I was so inflamed that nothing would come out...only blood and mucus. The last two days I am finally going. Not normal but at least its poo!. The blood and mucus is down also...not gone tho. And the bathroom trips are at 3-4 times a day. I told my dr. that I hadn't gone in almost 3 weeks...(last time I saw him) and he didn't seem to concerned. I did the miralax...no results...I did a fleet enema at the two week mark...some results but not nearly two weeks worth. I intend to question him more on this subject when I see him Wednesday!! Did you call your dr and what did he say?

I haven't spoken with him yet- he's not in his office on Mondays. I was sure hoping I'd get up this morning & have a good one, but nothing yet. Gas, some bloody mucous, that's it. Unreal. I'm not horribly uncomfortable, but I will probably pick up some Miralax today. I have to go to work tomorrow, so I'm hoping I get something going today! I can't go to work & be stuck in the bathroom all day! This yukky disease.... It's always something- either going too much, not going at all, etc. Hate it!

still nothing! can you believe it?!?!?! I did talk to my GI though, and he said not to worry- apparently, in the GI world, 4 days with no bm isn't that big a deal. He asked me if I'm eating (I am), & told me that my colon isn't really working properly anyway, which we both know. And that if over the next 2 days or so I become really uncomfortable (I'm not, which is totally surprising!) to use Milk of Magnesia, something super gentle. To me, it's just amazing.

so did you take anything besides the enema? I was ready to use one of those glycerine suppositories last night, & didn't for fear that I'd be in the bathroom all mroning today (Early day at work). I'm definitely picking up a bottle of Milk Of Magnesia today though- the worst is the gas! After I eat, I get that "Oh, No!" feeling.... run to the bathroom, nothing but some serious gas, a little blood, little mucous. I'm so envious of you going to the bathroom! redface

Thats the way it was with me. I did miralax...like milk of magnesia...Ha I also bought the glycerine suppositories and didn't use them because of the same reason. But rest assured I am prepared for the next time. :-) I see my dr tomorrow and am going to question him some more on this subject. it really scared me I kept thinking where or where is this poo going???? Am I going to blow up?? Funny I wasn't to uncomfortable tho. At times I was but for the most part no.

This is for Braille girl and eva lou,
I had a colonoscopy 3 weeks ago and have not had a regular bowel movement since. I have to depend on laxatives and once and awhile dribbles. I am on fiber and align. What has happened to you since your last post. I have the horrible feeling that this will never end. Before the procedure, I was extremely regular. Thanks,Barky

wow this thread is old! But, I've returned to my regular/non-regular bathroom habits- I do experience constipation fairly regularly. I try to eat fruit daily, plus a Metamucil wafer, & that tends to keep me going. I did wind up using Milk of MAgnesia after that scope which was awesome- completely got things moving again. And I've taken it a few times since, always works well with none of the negative effects associated with other laxatives. You coudl always try a T or 2 at night, of Milk of Magnesia, & see how that goes for youl. Good luck! I hate constipation as much, if not more so, than D- at least with D, you know you're stuck in the bathroom. With constipation, there's no telling when things are going to start moving again- god knows where you may be when you find yourself in the bathroom for an hour!

Before the scope were you regular or always on and off. I was so regular and now it is awful. I have so many friends that had the scope and never had this problem. Did you ever get any indication as to why. Glad to hear that you have returned to some normality two years later. Do you think the movi prep had anything to do with it? Trying to sort all this out as no one I know experienced this and even my doctor said he had not come across this. Just wish I knew if I would ever return to the way I was! Thanks for your input! I did have four polyps removed. Did you have polyps taken. I will try the milk of magnesia and thanks again.

Before the scope I was pretty irregular, which I think was probably due to massive inflammation- just passing mostly blood, mucous, etc. with very little actual stool. Now, a year or so later, I'm still irregular! Which I think is more due to the fact that my colon just doesn't work right, it seems to act as more of a holding tank than a regularly functioning organ. I'll go anywhere from 6-10x one day, then maybe go 1-2x the next day...then things even out a bit, I go my "usual" 4-6x daily for a week or so, then Bam! One day, after eating a lot or something, I go a dozen times again. Then the next day, it's maybe 1-2x. It's annoying....my GI suggested I try probiotics, which I do take. But they don't seem to regulate me much. Anyway, I doubt this irregularity is due to a colonoscopy- not after all this time. I didn't use movi-prep, I used Half-Lytely. I didn't have any polyps removed either, I have hundreds of pseudopolyps, from scarring & past inflamamtion though. Hope things get back to normal for you soon!

Thanks so much for your response. I am actually getting back to some normality. You sound like you had a more difficult time than I even before the scope. I was fine until the scope. Hoping that I get completely back to normal after what was considered a routine scope. Again thanks for your help. Barky
