Can probiotic treatment cause a die-off reaction in the first week or two of use at high dosage.

I started high dosage of probiotics to try and control IBS symptoms (rather than IBD). I got incredibly bad gas for 2 weeks, then I had what seemed a die-off reaction for 2 days and since then my stomach and bowel have made amazing progress.

From my experience...yes. It took a week or so to get over the bloating/gassy symptoms. Not too bad though. Your "amazing progress" on the probiotics causes me to bring up something I have brought up before,...that is, probiotics replenish our good bacteria, which in their absence allowed yeast to proliferate. If taking probiotics helps restore the good bacteria, squeezing out the abundance of yeast, and thereby helping ones' symptoms improve, doesn't it follow that yeast could have been a player in the gut problems to begin with? In my opinion, that is why those with UC or CD are often helped with diets like the SCD or Maker's Diet (versions of an antifungal diet). For me, my diagnosis of UC was really a fungal condition.

I agree. But I havent cut back on my sugar and yeast intake. Nor have I taken an antifungal. To be honest I've felt so good that I'm eating worse now then before. Yet my stomach and bowel seem well able to handle anything now whereas 2 weeks ago they were having IBS issues with most foods.

If indeed the probiotics have caused this turn around then I would hold me hand up and so that yeast overgrowth most definitely caused / added to my symptoms.

Be careful with your sweet abandon. :)

If your symptoms are truly a result of fungus/yeast, it (yeast) will rear up its ugly head again in a matter of time. Stay well........

I am not sure if it can cause die-off that fast or not, but recent experience for me suggests yes.

My GI took me off my probiotic while I was having unusual problems 2 months ago.

I just tried to restart it gently with one capsule every second day, but it caused my BM's to increase massively as well as urgency and gas.

I am not sure what to do now or why this has happened :-/
