Is what I just had, no blood though you can't tell.

Have been twice already when normally I go once - but I do get IBS.

I had a chinese last night - could it be the dark soy suace I had?

It could've been the soy sauce. If you keep having it, I would recommend you call your GI because black stool could be an indication of bleeding higher in the GI tract.

I emailed my GI and he called me right back saying that dark colouring in Chinese food can cause dark stools especially if the colouring is liquid.

He said he wasn't worried at all and for me to monitor it over a few days.

I have IBS and today I also got diarrhea but the stool colour remained a very dark brown/black colour. Surely the blood would would show on the toilet tissue and stools if they have come through my tract so fast as to give me D?

I hope I am worrying over nothing.

Isn't is weird that we seem to worry about the color, shape and size of our bm's when before being diagnosed we never even gave it much thought???? :) I'm sure you are worrying over nothing, but it's good that you are monitoring your health so closely. That is how one gets to "know" their body.

It's amazing the things we do. I asked my wife about hers and she said "I never look"...

I guess we have to use common sense and say sudden bout of dark stools followed by D is probably something I ate. God willing!

I'm pretty sure high instances of iron can cause dark/black stools. When I used to take iron, mine were always really dark and slowly lightened until I took the next supplement. It scared me the first few times so I researched and discovered iron can change the color.

Anyway, thought I'd throw this out there just in case.

I've had black stools with no other indication of bleeding (like red blood on the toilet paper).. It lasted a day or two and I called my GI who scheduled me for an EGD the next morning. Turned out I had bleeding in my stomach and high in the GI tract, which was causing the black stools, but I had no bleeding further down which I assume was why I didn't see any red blood.

ediekristen - but had you eaten dark soy sauce or other foods which might have caused it? I think the key is to see how long it lasts.

I hadn't, no, but I did swallow my new tongue ring (I bit the acrylic ball off while I was eating a sub sandwich) and the next day is when I had the black stools... I didn't tell the GI lady about it because I felt like an idiot (hah) but she actually FOUND it while she was doing the scope. Needless to say I got a little lecture from her and a HUGE one from my parents; they hated the tongue ring enough as it was, that just gave them more of a reason. Hahah.

And yes, I would definitely wait a day or three and see if it goes away, if not, then it's most likely not from food.

It could be still what you ate..have you eaten other stuff since the supposed culprit?

Are you still on the mesalazine?

How many times a day are you going?

I am going about 4 to 5 times a day and that's due to anxiety.

I am worried it might be Melena BUT it isn't sticky, it doesn't smell, it is just liquid poo that is black. It started off as solid BM's which are black. When I wipe with the tissue it then looks dark brown and not black.

Could it be blood? Surely that's the only thing it can be? Surely Dark Soy Sauce can't stay inside me for 48 hours especially when I am having D and have had other food since then?

I am fearing the worst although I feel totally well.

If you are very concerned then please go into the Dr. or the ER, however its done in your area. It is better err on the side of caution. I hope its just something silly and not something serious.

I personally have had really dark stools with no bleeding, no symptoms just black "sludgy" stool and it clear up in a few days and go back to a normal color.

Don't let my experience dictate what you do, if you're concerend go to the Dr. Trust me its better to listen to those instincts.

I think it would be good to email the doc again and see if you can do another stool sample to make sure if it's blood or not.

Yeah, I would think that the chinese food would have been well on its way out by now.

Did your doc do liver function blood tests before?

Is your urine still dark or has it returned to a normal colour?

IBS sucks, because it certainly can confuse matters, but it won't turn the colour of your stool dark.

Have you been eating anything else that might turn it darker....any pepto bismol?

I am still on Asacol yes. Saw the GI just now and he said although he thinks it is nothing it could be any of he following:

Ulcer, further inflammation which could be in the colon or further up which would mean Chrohns. If I am really unlucky it could be stomach cancer (God willing it isn't).

I just read the leaflet that came with the Extra Strength Asparin (300mg per tablet) (Anadin) I took this a couple of times a few days ago due to a back injury and in it says it may cause Black Stools, Bleeding etc. Give the that I have Colitis maybe that's what has caused it?

What I have is more or less stool less black liquid which doesn't appear to be blood but just black liquid which has made him confused. So more tests are required. Anyway, the GI has taken a stool sample (well black liquid sample), and done blood as a starter and we will take it from there.

Sounds as though the plan is in action. Keep us posted as to the outcome of the stool samples and how you're feeling.

The first readings on the blood came back all fine and perfect with my Hemaglobin at a very healthy level.

The doctor got an initial reading on the stool (this is the very next morning after the night before what a GI!) and has put me on Flagyl as he thinks there is some sort of toxic infection from food which has caused the bleeding. My Colitis obviously doesn't help. He will now wait on stool cultures and other things to check whether there ia anything else going on.

As a precaution after the Flagyl is finished he wants me to take a course of ant acids to eliminate the risk of stomach ulcers.

If things persist he will do an Endoscopy and Barium Enema to see if there is anything else going on.

I am so scared of the big C but he says that is unlikley (God Willing).

I just got offered a new job but this anxiety has me so bad that I don't if I should risk change even though it's a fantastic offer. The GI said I am being ridiculous and should take the job.

I think it is the Asprin too, I think it causes an infection and as per the label it caused by dark stools which remain today. I think the dark stools are a result of an infection which is making me both bleed and maybe not digest my food properly.

I intend to take the job, they have good private medical insurance too which allows "previous illnesses" to be treated. I just want to be better and after my UC the last thing I need is another desease. God willing I will be ok.

How long Flagyl take to kick in?

Start a new thread, and inidicate if the re is any reason to suspect colitis, and mention any history/meds/tests that are in play.
