Wondering if anyone else experiences slight pelvic cramps with their ulcerative colitis? I know it can be a sign of IBS and unfortunately colon cancer. And many female related things. This has occurred with me about 4 times over the past couple of weeks. My bowel movements are normal in appearance and sometimes I do go 3 times in a day sometimes, I have only been experiencing these cramps since my pap smear on June 27th.

Not to mention I am experiencing stinging in my pelvic area. Would like input from other UC'ers on here as to whether any of them have had this problem. And since I have been going through some female things also I cannot rule that out. Thanks for any input.

Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

All the organs are so close in proximity, it's difficult to recognise what exactly's going on. I have endometriosis and had a total hysterectomy in '91.

With some flares, I do get the "familiar period feelings" in the groin, back and down the inside of my legs...amazing how I remember them so well, but I suffered in agony with periods from day 1.

Have you been checked for a UTI? has the doc also done a urine test?

Regarding your fear of colon cancer.....when was your last c-scope? You best line yourself up for another and get it all thoroughly checked out since you're experiencing symptoms that you can't connect to anything specific.

Are you flaring at this time? bleeding, etc?

Are you still using the Rowasa?  how often?

I again suggest the antispasmodic..I use dicyclomine and would suggest to start with a low dosage you can use a few times a day than a high dosage that will zonk you out.

Hey Quincy, I am having no bleeding at all, not visible anyway. Stools are very formed, no diarrhea or constipation. I do sometimes go more than once a day. A good deal of low back discomfort. This stuff drives me crazy.

I always get pelvic pains and it's frustrating because sometimes it's hard to tell whether it's UC related or female related or what. I frequently get a stabbing/stinging pain, it's not really that excrutiating or anything and it usually doesn't last long but it's on the right side almost parallel to my hip bone but closer to my navel. Sometimes I also get stabbing pains in the lower colon/rectum area that feel like they could be in the uterus but it's probably more likely it's my colon. Those ones hurt.

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar region of the spine from long term prednisone use.

Currently unmedicated and flaring :(
Waiting for my appointment with the new GI on July 18th. Insurance finally kicked in, hooray!

I started getting those lower pelvic pains last January and wasn't in any sort of flare. Had x-rays, ultrasound (uterus) and CT scans (bladder and abdomen).  I was tested for interstitial cystitis at the urologist and they looked in my bladder. I guess IBD and IBS can cause bladder symptoms, especially if you are having a flare. All the organs push on each other and irritate each other. This is what the physical therapist told me (yes, they acutally sent me to a PT for my bladder issues! Always learning something new...).

I think as long as you get everything checked out - bladder, uterus, colon and the such - and rule out anything else it will put your mind at ease.

I was diagnosed with cervical dysplasia this past December after almost a year of trying to figure out the abnormal pap smears I had. I had cyrotherapy back in December of 07 to freeze the small spot and have had two normal paps since. But this last pap smear about 10 days ago caused much discomfort down below and I've been bleeding for 13 days now. I was not having this stinging and cramping sensations prior to the pap smear. I have had one bladder infection over a year ago and was checked for another one which came out negative.

I just did a home Azo test for a urinary tract infection that involves a test strip that you leave in the urine stream for 2 seconds and let it lay on tissue for 2 minutes. Light tan on the WBC and Nitrates after testing show negative, but darker tan on the WBC or white blood cells and light pink on the nitrates are positive. My WBC showed darker tan at the beginning of the positive side but the Nitrates showed negative. It said to test again and if the WBC showed positive again to contact the doctor.

I don't know how accurate those tests are but I would imagine pretty accurate. So I have had female issues for 1 1/2 years now. I forgot to mention I was diagnosed first with two uterine fibroids also.

Interesting, my gyn doc also discovered two uterine fibroids, a few years ago. I guess I still have them as they went in to do a myomectomy and found nothing on the inside so they're probably on the outside of the uterus. Well actually, the doctors never told me they didn't find anything, they just said "Okay we're all done, have a follow up scan in a few months" or something, and then when I had my medical records transferred to Iowa I told them I had uterine fibroids removed and they said "Uhh... no you didn't". I was really a little upset about that.

I've had one abnormal pap but I was on prednisone and a bunch of other meds at the time and they did a biopsy which showed very mild dysplasia, but I never had cyrotherapy and a month or two later my follow up pap was normal. I have always had frequent UTI's and used to have recurrent BV after periods as well.

Ah the joys of being a girl.

I would definitely call your gynecologist and tell them about the pain and bleeding, it doesn't seem to be normal to be that long after a pap.

Hi ediekristen. They are aware of my problem and have put me on a 10 day supply of Provera to stop my period and then after around 14 days I will have another one, . I am still showing signs of bleeding, day 13 and did mention to the nurse about the stinging and burning in the pelvic area. She said to try the Provera and if things did not straighten out and improve to call them back. I am 48 years old and in a younger woman abnormal paps usually resolve themself but not in a woman my age my gyn said. I wish they had a section on here for female issues like this but they don't. Put pelvic cramps can be from a lot of things. It's hard to know if this is female related or the other. I really feel it is female related mainly because I was not having cramps until after the pap. This stinks.

I think women are well equipt to know their bodies. If it does not feel like related UC pain, then next step is your gyn. Urine should be tested and u/s should be run, possibllly CT scan to.

I have chronic female problems, and can usually tell when it is my uc and when it is something else. I recently had pain in the lower abd. on the right side. I had to go to the ER and CT reveiled a ovarian cyst and a kidney stone. This is something that should be checked out for you.

Abnormal paps and cryo and leeps have never caused me any extra pain (tho when they do it is cervical pain, not abd. pain)

I suggest a urine, u/s and possible ct scan. GL

I did an over the counter UTI test made by Azo yesterday evening and the dip stick has two windows, the top one is for white blood cells and the bottom one is for nitrates. I retested this morning as it said to use the first morning's urine, the one yesterday afternoon showed negative on nitrates but the lowest level of postitive on white blood cells and this morning the white blood cell portion showed dark purple, the highest of the positive. I could not tell anything about the nitrate part as it looked different, it would have been light pink or some other color for positive result, I could not make out if it showed pink.

I've been taking those Azo pills for urinary burning and stinging and they make your urine orange. I need to let that clear out back to normal and try it again.

Have you seen a urologist yet? Maybe a good thing to consider. I did because he suspected interstitial cystitis...but after the bladder scope I didn't have any symptoms. Maybe just the clean-out from the scope cleared whatever was bothering it..

Hey Quincy, i definitely had a UTI. Showed up right away in the urinalysis I took. And my period is into day 18 now. I was put on Provera July 8th to stop that and have to take it 10 days and then again I will supposedly have another period 3 to 7 days later. So far the Provera has not stopped this bleeding, at times it is light during the day but breaks loose at night with a heavier flow. I am still having stinging somewhat in my pelvic area but it is better. I am on Macrobid 100mg antibiotic for the infection. I had the worst pain and cramps last night and had to take two tylenol and use the heating pad. The bleeding broke loose last night and soaked a pad in just a few seconds. Lots of clots. But it has leveled off today. This is driving me crazy. Several times at night the bleeding increases. I have to see my gastro doctor Thursday and know he will want to do a rectal exam and I hope I am not bleeding with my period that day. That might for a sticky situation. Thanks for asking.

Wow wits, 18 days and you're having that heavy of bleeding with clots? That's crazy! Your gyn didn't think that was abnormal?
I had a period that lasted almost a month once a few years ago, it was mostly light spotting though. I can't remember what they ever did about it, I didn't have to take anything, they just said let's hope it stops sometime, and eventually it did. Later they thought it had to do with the uterine fibroids.

It is heavy at times. Not every day though. Lighter during the day most of the time, but it has come on again now. It increases more at night a good deal of the time, and it doesn't do that every night. A woman I work with had hyperplasia and her period lasted for 28 days before it stopped. That is why I think most of the problem is female related. Hopefully this will stop totally soon but then I will start again.

Did you have a gyne exam?

I couldn't even imagine having a period for 18 days and continuing. It's good at least a test showed something regarding a UTI....that could also be from hormonal ups and downs I think.

Have you had the intervaginal ultrasound to see what else is going on?
Have you had your ovaries checked?

I sure you get to the bottom of what's going on...your suffering has definitely gone on a long time.

Hi, as i mentioned before, you should have a "interanl" ultrasound! Your ovaries should be checked. I have chronic ovarian cysts, and they mess my periods up all the time. As of recently, i had bled for a week, had 5 days off, bleed another 8 days, had 3 days off and then bleed another 6 days!!!! I have a cyst right now!

I also have issues w/ clotting, and that is a result of endometrosis (tho, not always the case), but it is for me...this can only be dx, by surgery.

Pain, long periods, sure sounds like ovarian cysts to me. Get to the doc and get an u/s. There are many different types of cysts and some MUST come out right away and some can stay, and others can twist the ovary (had 1/3 of one ovary removed due to tortion already), so it's really not something to play with if you have not had children yet.

Hey Quincy, I am 48. My periods have been coming only every two months since February anyway. Today I've had not much bleeding at all. The nurse at my gyn office said to finish the Provera and hang in there for a couple of more weeks and then things would turn around. The Provera causes the bloating and gas she said. And I've found I have a not so nice bacteria that somehow came in contact with my urinary tract and caused the infection I have. And the macrobid I was on is useless against this bacteria and they switched me to Ciprofloxacin. The bacteria is resistant to many antibiotics but Cipro works against it. The bacteria is a normal bacteria found in people's intestinal tracts, their mouths, and on their skin and it can get outside the intestines and into the urinary tract. It is second behind the E-Coli bacteria as to causing urinary tract infections. But it is a bacteria needed in the colon as it keeps the colon healthy. The bacteria is called Klebsiella Pneumoniae. It can be found in soil, water, and vegetables also, including lettuce. So I think more of the discomfort down below is all related to this bacteria and hopefully I will see some improvement after tomorrow and 3 rounds of the antibiotic. I had a pelvic exam back the end of March and everything was normal including the pap smear. I haven't had a vaginal ultrasound in a while, not since they diagnosed my uterine fibroids, and I have had a endometrial biopsy which was negative when I had it. I had it the same day as the vaginal ultrasound. Haven't had one since. But all this discomfort in the pelvic area is from the infection. I've felt ill with it and have had chills at times. This bacteria causes pneumonia when in a hospital setting. Horrible name.

WOW.....did the doc do a urine culture to find this out?  Scary stuff to be sure.  I just found this info on it....good reading for anyone who's interested in it.
The title is interesting..

Didn't realise it can be up there in the superbug category.  Makes sense if there haven't been any cultures done.  I hope the cipro will deal with it quicker and that you'll start to feel better soon.
Could it also be part of the vaginal infection?  That's probably how it migrated as a uti.  We (women) have too many things in close proximity...have one problem and it all wants to get into the act..sigh.  I also believe that once hormones get out of whack, it opens us up for a much lowered immune system regarding infections.

I found this quote from Wikipedia
"Research conducted at King's College, London has implicated molecular mimicry between HLA-B27 and two molecules in Klebsiella microbes as the cause of ankylosing spondylitis.[4] "

More interesting is that there's a connection between AS and UC.... I don't totally understand all of the bio information....but it's good to know that cultures for anything persistent is definitely the way to go rather than using meds that can exacerbate the situation.

WOW again!!!  I'm glad you have a diagnosis.  Please keep us updated as to how you're doing.  Improvement will be an awesome thing.
Can you take probiotics to help keep your colon from being too affected from the Cipro?

They did indeed do a urine culture and that showed up. I think they probably just got the result back yesterday and would have called me probably before the end of the day. I read that it takes 2 to 3 days to test and get the results from the culture so that would have been Tuesday or Wednesday. And since I was in there late Friday until 5:00 p.m., they probably would have not gotten my urine sent off probably until Monday. My bleeding is starting again from the female area, I start feeling weird down there right before a bout of breakthrough bleeding from this Provera.

Totally sucks you're going through this....I'd be in tears constantly.

No offense on this....but would you consider a hysterectomy? or maybe even an ablation? I've had a hysterectomy...greatest decision regarding those nasty female issues. I have to be on HRT, however...low dosage....

I hope you get relief soon.

I've been thinking about the hysterectomy but my husband is totally against it. He is not having these problems. I don't understand his thinking. Why would he care if I kept my parts or not???

hmmm, interesting. I'm guess he doesn't think your suffering is bad enough. You could ask him exactly why...for some men it seems to be mostly sexual or cultural so I've heard.

Would he leave you if you had one?

Again, not meaning to offend....I know it's an emotional issue.

How does he support you at this time with all you're going through? If he doesn't get what's going on...

The mostly sexual isn't the case. Since there isn't much where that is concerned anyway. It isn't him going through this. He thinks my doctor group are a bunch of quacks anyway. He said if I weren't better by Monday I need to go somewhere else. I'm hoping to see some improvement by Monday. Between that and the constant on and off bleeding, which I have had a pretty good flow and cramps this morning, hoping something improves soon. I don't feel bad every minute. I have good points during the day, but then have that one low point.
