Does anyone else have problems with gas mainly at night. Hubby seems to get most of his gas as soon as he lays flat. He has some gas all day but the worst is at night. Is this normal? Any ideas to reduce some? Gas pains are keeping him awake at night.

UC is a really gassy disease.

im usually the most gassy in the morning...so i would have to say that it seems to be a personal thing.

i find that if i dont eat a couple hours before going to bed that helps reduce the gas later.

Concerned wife, gas comes with UC, and Mesalamine tends to increase it. Sometimes cautiously adding in some soluble fiber will help control it. Start with a minimal amount of something like Metamucil, and increase it as tolerated. This sometimes also helps bulk and firm up the stools.

I used to have a lot of gas when I was on the Asacol, I noticed you list mesalamine 12 pills a day, is that Asacol? The gas did lessen after awhile, but not for about 6 months or so.

I noticed this while flaring too. Some relief was found by laying on the couch - on my left side - for a bit before bed and expelling some of the gas.

He could also try Gas-X or equivalent to see if that helps.

How long after he's eaten his last meal/snack before he goes to bed for the night?

If he's eating too close to bedtime this could be part of the problem for him.

He could try digestive enzymes after each and every meal to help break his food down for him and this may help with the gas issues.

:)

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it!  LOL  :)

Thank you for all the replies. He doesn't usually eat after 7 and goes to bed around 11. Sometimes has a protein drink "spirutein" but not always. He tried gas x doesn't seem to help.
We have some digestive enzymes. The papaya ones you get at the health food store.

He is in kind of odd shape. His D and blood are gone but has still pain in the colon. Just got out of the hospital after his 3rd visit of 7 plus days. First time in May 11 days then in June 8 days and then Just last week for 7. The blood has never come back since the first day home from hospital in May. But when he goes in he has a high fever and the cat scan and xrays show that he has a severe flare going and they want to do surgery. He is still weak and can't get any weight on. This last bout in the hospital cost him another 7 pounds.

Frustrating

Is there any kind of dairy in the protein drink "spirutein"??? Sounds like there could be. If so that in itself could cause the problems. I use various things at different times. I keep Phazyme at home, Gas-X and even something called CharcoCaps. They after using them so often make your stools appear black at times so don't be concerned if he does try it and sees that, it is normal. Even states so on the box. I have been mixing a tablespoon of Metamucil once a day in 8 ounces of water and drinking it. It does bulk up my stool and my gas is not always present. And when it is, it usually is within a few hours of eating. As for when my occurs, it occurs at night and in the morning. But chances are when you go to bed with it late at night you will have it the next morning. And it is an annoying and uncomfortable problem. Here are a list of the side effects.

Mesalamine may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • headache
  • muscle or joint pain, aching, tightness or stiffness
  • back pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • heartburn
  • burping
  • constipation
  • gas
  • dry mouth
  • sore throat
  • cough
  • flu-like symptoms
  • stuffy head or runny nose
  • ear pain
  • anxiety
  • sweating
  • hemorrhoids
  • pain in the rectum
  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • acne
  • slight hair loss

Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

Spirutein is a soy based powder, no dairy, no gluten. It comes from health food store. We have been trying to avoid dairy although he does eat cheese sometimes when he is needing some flavor. His tastebuds are way off. I f he has that he takes a couple of lactaid pills.
