This morning I had a really hard BM. It felt like it was ripping through my rectum. When I examined it, there were small traces of blood. None on the tiolet paper. I went down to 10mgs of prednisone on Sunday and am expected to drop to 5mgs this Sunday. I have tapered my steriod enemas to every other day.

I just ran out and bought a "Fiber One" bar and some benefiber.

I am just wondering...before I start to FREAK out and call my Dr. or start running through all the possible scenarios in my head....do you think it could be a one time thing because the poo was soooo hard? I am so nervous...I DONT WANT TO INCREASE MY PREDNISONE!!!!!

This is how my flare started. Now I am losing blood with every movement.  One thing that has helped this two weeks for me is lots of water, salad for dinnerfollowed by metamucil wafers. I can normally sleep through the night and I have a movement in the morning. IT has made the BM move through me easiar.  I am seeing my GI today.  I hope you can avoid a flare.

Prednisone 40mg a day
Asacol 400mg 4 pills 3 times a day

I am in the middle of coming down from a flare that started back in June. I had a flexsig on July 8th that confirmed the proctitis was severe. I have been symptom free for 3 weeks...and now this.

Normal for just low in the rectum inflammation. You'll have some regression of symptoms while tapering.

Try to relax about it...the fibre (make sure you're eating enough foods and taking in enough water as well or it can make things worse)..as well as the stool softeners will help your poor butt.

Are you using the Canasa and the enemas still?

Hang tough, don't call the doc uless your symptoms worsen....

Micromanaging each symptom will take you away from recognising the progress and what's normal with healing and tapering pred.

keep us informed.

quincy,

Yup, using the canasa in the morning and tapered the hydrocorti enema to every other night.

i did just check my colonoscopy report from February and nothing was in the cecum. inflamation was only in the rectum. i had a sig in June...would that show the cecum?

Thanks again. i just am so DEPRESSED and want to move forward so i can get back to IVF and trying to have a baby.

Youmay have caused a small fissure or tear when passing the very hard stool hence the ripping feeling you've described...

Yes, it could be a fissure, but if it were, blood would be for sure on the toilet paper.

If you're tapering the enemas, use a suppository on the nights you're not using them.

You may want to get back to business regarding having a baby, but really...I'll suspect you'll need the rectal meds.

How long were you on the enemas?....I suggest actually that you should stay on them nightly until you're off the pred....then taper them.
OR....
Stay on them every second night, use Canasa for the between nights and stay there until you're off the pred.

Regarding the pred tapering...at the lower dosages that seem difficult to do...stagger the taper...10, 5, 10, 5, 10, 5...5...

Try not to be too impatient at this time, for you will flare again. Take this as a learning process...

In any event...it all sucks...for that I can attest.

So I freaked this morning and called the doctor after having a hard big poo (can that be from too much fiber)...with the same amount of traces of blood. I did the hyrdrocortisone enema last night. This morning I started to think maybe the canasa is not doing the trick so I did a rowasa enema. I am obviously ALL CONFUSED and ALL OVER THE PLACE RIGHT NOW!!

Questions...

1). Is rowasa more effective than the canasa (what if the canasa is not reaching the "one inch of proctitis that I have"?

2). I was asacol for 2 years and never had a problem until I got off my mediciation, got pg and had a miscarriage...what is better...colazal or asacol for proctitis? Since I have been put on the colazal I have had a flare up.

3). Is it normal to have "traces of blood" in your stool? Am I freaking out too much?

4). My last sigmoidoscopy was July 8th.....when the dr. calls back....I am tempted to ask for another one. I want to see if I have made any progress in the past month.

5). The prednisone is obviously working as I am not dripping blood into the bowl or having mucus...I just do not want to up my dose and want to stay CLEAR of it.

6). Anybody with ONE INCH OF proctitis on remacade? Seems so harsh for my condition.

Thanks for all the advice!!

It could be possible that your colon is almost healed and the hard stool is causing some remaining tender tissue to open and bleed a bit...hopefully with continued use of the rowasa the colon will heal completely and the blood will be completely gone in time.

I have not had any problems with using the bathroom hardly at all except a little bit ago. I noticed when I pushed to use the bathroom I felt a little painful twinge in my lower left side. I go good every day usually but this morning my stools haven't amounted to much. I drink plenty of water. I've never had anything like this occur before. I took a stool sample to my doctor yesterday to check for any bacteria, I hope if they decide to do a check for hidden blood it shows nothing.

Is a twinge like that typical with colitis on occasion? It could be a gas twinge though.
Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.
