I was diagnosed with UC about 6 months ago and am in remission. I have noticed since then that some symptoms show up when I'm on my period. Usually slight pain and loose stools. I asked my doc about this and he didn't seem concerned. Does this happen to anyone else? Usually it only last about 2-3 days but it has lasted longer this time. I'm new to this so any advice or reassurance would be greatly appreciated.

I take (4) 400mg asacol 3 times a day, omega-3, calcium supp

This is really common, Vinny. Many of our female members report this. I did notice you're not taking a probiotic, which many of us do take. It helps to keep the level of healthy bacteria up in the colon and prevents infections with undesirable bacteria. If you do a forum search (click on the blue search button at the top), you'll find a lot of discussion of probiotics.

Welcome to HealingWell, we're sorry you have UC but glad you found us.

during periods, prostaglandins are released and they affect the colon by causing cramping, diarrhea or loose stool and frequency.
If you're flaring, the symptoms will be exacerbated by your period.

I do suggest you get on rectal meds, you're probably in the beginning of a flare.
I also second the probiotics. You might also consider a fibre supplement that can help bulk up a loose stool...

Welcome to the forum.

Even when I'm not flaring I have problems. I went on bc when I had my first flare and that helps most of it but sometimes a tummy ache will slip by.
