I don't know if anybody else experiences this but whenever I am in a flare up my gas literally smells like something crawled up inside my colon and died.. Anybody know why this happens? I figure it's because my instestines are swollen therefore not absorbing the food, resulting in that food staying there fermenting until it is pushed out.. Anybody else have this symptom? If so is there anything you do to make it not so bad? God I love this disease!!... (sarcasm)

LOLOLOL!  I am sitting here at the computer, just passed gas right before I read your post and almost passed out from the stench.  I had chicken soup for dinner and yogurt for lunch.  It could be the meds or some of the other "stuff" I take..ie...probiotics, flaxseed oil capsules, fish oil capsule, vitamin...ugh.

I do have that from time to time as well but I noticed it most prominently when I eat turkey, like on Thanksgiving. I would even burp and it would smell like the turkey was just hanging out, rotting in my stomach. So gross. It's weird though, some days I'll pass gas and it will literally have no smell (which is great!) and other days it will be like "Holy crap, how on earth did that come from me!?" haha.

I wonder if maybe it's to do with the inflammation/bacteria overgrowth or something.

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) for 8 years so far; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar spine from long term prednisone use....

Oh and I also notice that when I'm bleeding a lot it smells worse (gas and stool) and you can actually smell the blood. Crazy.

You know... I wonder if non-UCers pop in here from time to time and are like "What the heck are these people talking about?!  shocked " Hahaha

I totally used to get this. As a matter of fact it was one of the first noticable symptoms i had before the onset of being diagnosed with UC.  I really believe the smell is caused by the combination of food you eat and a flora inbalance of the intestines. Basically bad bacteria running rampant and out of control. This is accompanied with gas and bloating too. The only relief so far and just recently i have found for this is...

1. Fix your diet, stop the bad carbs, fats, sugars, and so on. Eat healthy and stick to it...i know its hard!
2. Restore your good intestinal bacteria with probiotics and diet(above). I was taking 10 billion CFU's of acidopholis with no results, frustrated i decided to increase to 50 billion CFU's daily, I had amazing results and still feeling great with no gas at all! Just an idea.
