People on here know that I don't have much pain with my colitis thank God. However every time I try a strong Probiotic like Rueteri or Digestive Advantage I get pain. Ranging from wind, rib pain, back pain and gut pain. Its awful and is now nearly making me flare again. Why does this happen?

Diagnosis Oct 07 and then Aug 08: Inditerminate Colitis - Minor Bleeding
Medication: 1000mg Asacol Enema, 800mg Asacol Tablets x 2 a day, Digestive Advantage

Some people mention the same complaints and others have suggested that it may be "die off" that your experiancing..I've tried 3 probiotics and never had any symptoms at all from any of them...I'm currently using the primadophilus reuteri made by natures way with more success than I've had from the other 2 I've tried.

...maybe stick with it in the hopes that it's simply die off and once that process is over then the symptoms will be gone...maybe cut the does you're taking to start with and move up to a higher dose when the symptoms are gone...play around with dosage and see what works best.

Feel better soon :)

Sounds like the severe gas pains I get (sometimes all over inside) and expel.  Take it slowly - gets better or try a different one.  I take Align - two others gave me so much gas.  Also, take Gas-X - it helps!

The pain is worse than any UC symptom I have. Could it be some sort of Chronic Indigestion?

My body hates high dosage probiotic but never complained about mild ones like Biocare.

Anyone else had this? Can anyone else describe what "die off" feels like for them?

I know that every time I've tried a new probiotic, for the first few days, I'm extremely gassy, which causes cramps that can sometimes stop me dead in my tracks. It usually goes away after a few days though. How long have you been suffering? Have you tried easing your way onto a pro-b? Kind of a reverse taper...take one today, none tomorrow, one the day after, none after that...do that until you feel like you can tolerate a higher dose. I'm not familiar with digestive advantage, but every pro-b I've tried required multiple doses throughout the day. Just take your time. If you are still getting pains, then stop taking the pro-bs. Sometimes, you just have to give up the experiment and say that something isn't for you.

digestive advantage (or as I refer to it; digestive DIS-advantage) has a lot of additives that are un-necessary, dyes, sugar/artificial sweeteners, stuff I can't even pronounce...that could be a big reason why you're having issues with that particular brand...the only thing primadophilus reuteri from natures way has in it is a little bit of potato starch for preservation.

Reuteri did exactly the same thing. Or maybe I am having kidney, spleen, colonic problems on the left side - who knows. Might not even be UC related.

Have you seen your doc about this? You probably really should since as you say there could be something else besides UC going on and maybe it's just coincidence with the goings on when you take probiotics because generally probiotics are nothing more then friendly bacteria and so't generally cause any side effects, many people don't even notice symptoms of "die off" when it's occurring. Best bet is to talk to your doc.

Doc says it is a muscle injury that (I have seen 3 different ones this past week!) and the other problems are related to my gastric issues in the stomach.

Sounds like gas to me...probably from "die-off", which could last a week.  However, if you're not cutting back on sugars and starches it may continue beyond a week.

"Die off" is a tiring experience. Alot of gas, bloating, and lethargy. All the toxins are being released from the dying organisms which can cause a mild type of food poisoning. The liver is overloaded and tries to deal as best it can. If refined starches (the main food item for baddies) is removed from the diet, usually 1-2 weeks is all it takes for the symptoms to ease.

The only side I have got from ultra high doses of probiotics is occasional constipation. I try to avoid those experiments anymore...

Remember as you take probiotics, you are introducing a new strain of bacteria into your gut. It takes some getting used to when switching up. I like to stay on the same brand and relatively same dose. Sometimes I ramp up when flare symptoms appear .

Also, look in the ingredient list on the back of the product. Many companies add lactose as a filler in their formulas.

Anytime I go on high dosages of probiotics I get the die off effect. Lasts about 2 days and once its gone I then get a long period of perfect BMs. Of course then I eat bad again and that gets me back to square 1!!
Probiotics and maintenance 5ASA's in rectal form

I've heard Natren's Bifido Factor in the non-dairy formula and in the powder, not the capsule, is the best and gentlest high quality probiotic to try if your gut's very sensitive. The cool thing about the powder form is you can easily adjust your dose, starting off with a very small amount and building gradually, allowing your body to adjust.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Hi, Im a new memeber.  Reuteri probiotics is new to my daily routine, has anyone had pain in lower abs and kidney area with this.  I have been on probiotics of a very high dose, and have experienced die-off effect.  This is not that.  It is pain and smell in the urine (like sulfur).  I tested for UTI and it was not that.  Any ideas?  But I do take 1000mg of Vit. C.  Would that throw off the UTI strips tests.

I have been taking all 3 of the Natren products for about a month now and I have not had any problems at all.

I did start out with just a 1/4 teaspoon of each of the 3 for about a week in the mornings on an EMPTY STOMACH ONLY.  I then went up to 1/2 Teaspoon again for a week.  On week 3 I began 1/2 teaspoon morning and evenings combined with VSL#3DS.

I just ordered the trinity caps and the lifestart2 today to add in the mix.  If that's not enough of the good guys then I don't stand a chance! smilewinkgrin

Hope this helps!
