Lately I see an improvement in a way where I can eat and I don't rush off to the bathroom, this is huge. I go to the bathroom back and forth in the AM for about a hour, mushy stool, very little blood if any, still a little pain from the cut tensing up to poo.(I use peppermint oil on my gut to relieve the pain, it works).
During the day I have this liquid I have to push out my rectum, it's not diarreah it looks like, light mucus (usually creamy color) but it only comes out if I push it, otherwise there's no urgency and I go to the bathroom just usually in the AM. I know I have inflammation b/c my anus swells like it's a hemmroid(ususally one set of tissue)  but my hemmroid doc said it's not, it's inflammation. My colon doc said not to take meds if they bother me and b/c I'm "mild" it's up to me if I want to take them. She was vague about me taking meds at all, she just said after the 5ASA's, "the big guns come out" and I said what Prednisone and she said no, immnospressants, is this right?
I took canasa about a month ago for two nights and the back of my eyes hurt during the day and I never had that happened before. How come when I take canasa, the prelude to my stool there's mucus and puplish colored blood? Is that drying up blood or is the canasa making me bleed since it just sits in one stop without moving around? I do have retention enemas, but those, OMG they really make me feel sick in the morning.
Since I started posted a couple years ago, has anyone said they experieced the rectum swelling up on one side or both side, like a hemmroid hanging out, but my do said it's not a hemmroid, it's inflammation, also though my colon doc said I don't have UC at my rectum, only on the left side and by cecum (just a patch of both, very, very mild she said). I know this is a lot to read, but comment if you will on what you think about my senerio please and Thank You. Linda

Hi Linda...it all seems to be a contradiction from what the doc says. It is definite you have some sort of inflammation low in the colon.,,rectally or if not that, then anally.

I'm puzzled that your doc gave you the results of a c-scope from a year ago and mentions you wouldn't have any symptoms of the contrary at this time.
Did she take a look in your rectum to see what's going on in there during your recent appointment?

The loose stool or diarrhea would be from either inflammation or quickening of your colon activity or both.

It's obvious you cannot take 5ASA meds...that could be part of your syptoms..maybe consider to go off them.

The immunosuppressants would be imuran, 6-MP, Methotrexate or Remicade and Humira which are considered biologics.

Have you tried any steroid enemas/suppositories or oral topical steroid such as Entocort? It's possible they as a combination could help you, especially since your cecum is involved.

Regarding your results....what exactly did the report show...that you had exreme changes in the structure level from past inflamation..etc?

Can you possibly get a call into the doc again soon so that she can possibly prescribe you something such as steroid suppositories to help the rectal straining. You do have to be careful that you don't strain too much (advice I have to take as well because it feels better to push), because that will add to causing hemorrhoids (both internal and external) as well as possible prolapse of the anus or rectum....although I believe that hemorrhoids are considered prolapses of sorts.

I do hope you could get some relief .... maybe you should consider to eventually try the bigger meds.

ya know, I get that exact thing sometimes- thruout the day, when I go to the bathroom I push out the liquid- I don't strain, nothing hurts, no blood or urgency, but the light liquidy mucous. I'm guessing it's just mucous sloughing off from the inner colon wall, probably lower in the rectum. I don't do anything about it. It's not something that causes me distress, I'm on the big gun meds already, I probably should use a rectal med every now & then but I don't have any in the house right now. And it's not a constant- I find if I have a couple bad days, then the liquid increases. Lately I've been doing really well, so I haven't had this in a while. But it was a daily thing for a few months. Right now I'm just holding out until a colonoscopy, which should be done in March, to see what that comes up with. It's got to be better than last years!

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
Culturelle
Fiber supplement

HI Heather,

You didn't comment on when I take the Canasa I have mucus with purple in it, is that dried blood or fresh blood from the night when I put it in do you think?

I agree with you about my doc, but I swear she was like you're the mildest case every she said, she made it seem like I could leave or take meds, and if I could get away without them I should, if I can't them take them. She's good when you can see her, it takes 2 months to get into her no matter how important you think it is. Even after my scope, I was on a 2 months waiting list to go over the results, she explained everything to the person that went with me and she felt she did a sufficient job at that.If I switch GI's all they want to do first is a dang scope, no thank you. Michigan folks if there's a GI you absolutly love, let me know and I maybe will switch. My great insurance is ending b/c my divorce is final in less than 8 days, so that's a bummer.

I had two scopes by 2 different docs almost 2 years apart.  I'm on no meds at this time and haven't been since August. about 3 weeks ago I did 2 nights of Canasa b/c I was on vacation and could take the rectum poking out. When I have no inflammation and i've  experienced that 2 times for 2 days in 4 years, but my butt is completely normal, so I know it's inflammation.

What would be a steriod suppository? I have the liquid Rowasa, but that makes me so sick in the morning.

Thanks for the advice, I feel I'm doing ok, no urgency, no bleeding (not much at all) I go to the bathroom in the AM, so D during the day, but less than 4 bm's a day, more like just AM with liquid during the day. It seems like IBS mostly, but I need to get the inflammation down.
Has anyone done a probiotic enema? If that bacteria is off and the meds make it worse maybe a enema might work? Do you know anything about this?  Please answer if you can about seeing purple mucus, that kinda scares me a little.
First scope 7/05 should no UC, but I was bleeding with urgency, was told I had IBS. Six months later, sigmoid showed UC at rectum, 2nd colonoscopy & Endoscopy 7/27/07, Left sided colitis and near cecum (mild) no UC at rectum. On and off meds, but the side effects are worse than the dis-ease itself. 5ASA's make me highly nervous, feeling on verg of panic attack all day, thence "accidents", especially when driving.
12/08 Olive leaf extract, probiotics, holy basil, whole food multi-vitamin. I manage on a daily basis, work out 4-5 times a week. I feel like a volcano during the day and erupt in the AM (bathroom for a hour), the it starts all over again. Try to eat gluten free and low sugar diet.

The purple mucus is the change of colour of the 5ASA mixed with either a bit of blood or a bit of stool. It's sometimes difficult to tell.
I had that for the first three mornings after using the 5ASA enema this week since I'm now flaring. I had a bit of blood, which was a shocker for me..but none as of the past 2 days, so short lived. The purplish colour was kind of funky I thought, but I do know that the enemas and suppositories can change colour like that coming out if they're 5ASA.

I've not done the probiotic enema.

The steroid suppositories would be hydrocortisone, The doc would prescribe them i believe, I don't think they're available over the counter. Anucort HC, Anusol HC and Cort-dome are the brand names available.

If you do have inflammation of the rectum, it wouldn't mean it's not UC free I wouldn't think...therefore it's not really "normal". .it seems your doctor is creating more frustration since it's difficult to get in to see her and her diagnosis seems a bit "willy nilly"...;-) She really should have taken a look considering the discomfort you're in and that you're having some kind of prolapse. Maybe an ano-rectal surgeon could help get some diagnosis with that?

You should put out another question in a separate thread enquiring for another GI.
