I have had UC for 10 years.  This is my 3rd flare and my worst yet. 2 months so far and the Dr has me on Colazal and Prednisone.  I will start the Remicaid treatment in a week or so.

What is surprising is my bowel movements have gone from diarrea to severe constipation.  No movements for up to 3 days at a time.  My latest one has been 5.  I am so swollen and in pain.  I was admitted to the hospital during the last one for Xrays to make sure there was no blockage.  Just impacted.

These last 5 days are killing me and my body seems immune to laxatives, a suppository did not work and my Dr is not much help.  I don't understand why my body can't make a bowel movement.

Any advice you can give me from your experience like mine I would appreciate.

Hi.. welcome to the forum.

Is your UC throughout your colon or limited (to where?)?

As we heal, the rectum will be the last to heal....with the rest of your colon probably healing and the rectum still inflamed, It seems to have some "control" over the colon movements and can slow things down a lot. Sometimes better since it hurts a lot when a formed stool goes through a severely inflamed butt.

It's good you don't have a blockage.

You could do a few things to start to loosen the stool a bit...fibre supplement such as Metamucil. Add fruit, veggies, etc.

But, for the stool that's in there already, it will eventually come. Using rectal meds will help heal the rectum.

Are you eating enough food? Taking in enough fluids?

You could try to sit in a warm sitz bath to try and relax the anal/rectal muscles a bit...that could encourage a bm.

Do you drink coffee? That for many people will help stimulate the sigmoid into "downloading" stool into the rectum....it's a great kick-start.

Hope this helps.

Greetings Quincy,
It is in my entire colon.  I am currently taking prednisone and colazal.  I do drink alot of fluids, mostly water.  No coffee at all.  Every time I eat my entire abdomen area just swells and bloats up.  It gets very hard.  My GI told me to lay off the fiber right now while the UC is flared up.  What about an anemia or suppository.  Are those helpful.

Thanks so much for responding.

I would still suggest rectal meds...but if you need to get relief at the bottom of your colon, an enema would help.

The enema for bm relief and medicated enema are not to be confused with each other.

The point is to change the pattern....

The other option that could help is an antispasmodic...that can help relax the tight response in the rectum and hopefully help you have a bm.

Try the coffee

I've been in similar situations before, going as long as 10 (!) days without a movement. Metamucil/psyllium works well for me.
23 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.
  • Psyllium powder
  • Culturelle probiotic
  • Pentasa
  • Cortenema

I took your guys advice and bought some prune juice, drinking a 1/2 a cup a day. Don't want to over do it.
I wish I could get the swelling to go down. I am a small framed female, 5' and 108lbs. My entire abdomen is iSO swollen and hard. I can't understand for the life of me why it won't go down. It has been this was for a month. Maybe from the stool and ulcers?
Thanks for all of the advice !

I totally understand what you're going through! ( have a look at my previous posts....)...

Basically, I get severe constipation with my UC....I recently had to go into hospital because I was fit to burst (literally, the X-Rays showed I was full to the brim)...doctors gave me enema's and I took regular laxitives, but nothing would make me go to the toilet!

I finally got relief by the following methods....

1) I was so full of cr@p, I could not eat any more....so went on a liquid only diet for a week.
2) I drank Metamucil ( smooth texture) once a day
3) I drank 3 glasses of prune juice a day
4) I took 3 caplets of Flaxseed Oil
5) I took 3 stool-softing capsules a day
6) I took rectal meds for my UC ( Protofoam and Pentassa)

Finally, after a week of doing all this, I went to the toilet and got some relief. It's not funny being constipated, I know. I was in agony and I looked like I was pregnant! The UC inflammation really plays havoc with my regularity...the poop doesn't want to pass the sore bits!
I hope that doing some or all of the above will help you..

Colazal can bring on constipation. One should drink plenty of water while on it & avoid high doses of vitamin C & D, in my experience. I found steamed yams effective at getting the waste moving again. Let them stay in the steamer until they get soft & moist enough to mash with a fork. Then try eating a small portion 1st to see how it agrees with you. Moisture is the key, but you'll also get some nutritional benefit, too, from the yellow veggie. Best wishes! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; Colazal is most helpful for me-- but not at high dosage)

Hi guys..

I also have ulcerative colitus and had major constipation. Then I discovered Spirulina and linseeds. I sprinkle linseeds in yoghurt and i add spirulina powder to water every morning.

Spirulina has a disgusting taste(even though other reviews about it,says it tastes good)so i tend to drink it with a straw, quickly, so it is over and done with quickly.

For about 2 weeks i had a super hard and bloated tummy as these are the effects of spirulina when you have digestive problems, but after 2 weeks, not only do i go every day, but i have so much more energy and feel great. It worked for me.. try it.

I had the same problem except I went over a month without a normal bowel moment, just a little liquid would squeeq on by whenever I had the urge to go.. I tried laxatives, enemas, and consuming a lot of liquids.. I went to a doctor and the hospital, both gave me different laxatives.. None worked to where I felt I removed the impacted feces.. I was inflamed severely and wasn't aware I had ulcerative colitis at the time so it made it more difficult to understand what was going on.. Turns out that it is normal for a UCer to experience this from time to time.. Eventually I was schedualed a colonoscopy so the liquids they made me drink prior to the appointment flushed me all out (bowel suprep) .. Then once I was diagnosed and brought on medication it hasn't been as bad as far as the constipation is concerned, but with the disease you will experience both cases of diahreaha and constipation.. If your lookin for a laxative that will flush you out within about 4 hours I definitely recommend castroil
This is the only laxative I took that worked the most, it doesn't taste great but all you need is 3 table spoons and your definitely gonna start running to the bathroom within a few hours.. it's been around for years, not expensive, doesn't have a pretty package to it do most people look past it, but I def recommend it, and also you should YouTube massaging techniques on the abdominal area when in the bathroom which stimulates the intestines to push forward backed up feces as well.. This works surprisingly TREMENDOUS for me and others, when your really backed up, things like prune juice or fiber aren't gonna do much, castroil and massaging will def help you.. Hope this info helped ya out a bit
22 year old male, diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis on Jan 7th 2013, still remain in flare.. Currently taking Asacol Hd (800mg, 6 pills a day) and Prednisone (20mg, 3 times a day)
