Good Day,

Spoken like a good Canadian, eh?

I know I saw this posted someplace along the way and I'm sure it was on here.

A few weeks ago I started feeling like things were looking up with my UP. I had a nagging cough kind of hanging around so I went into a Walk-In. The good doctor checked me over had me cough, etc and said I just had a bit of an infection and I'm assuming it was bacterial so she prescribed me the
Z-Pack (Azithromycin)sp

After completing the 5 day course of pills, a day later we went and had a very rich meal at a friends, which I was thinking was the reason for my flare.

Thinking about this yesterday, I now recall seeing something with respect to someone having a flare start up after a round of antibiotics. I know that antibiotics can help fix us up, but they can also mess us up. The one other thing is that I believe I ran out of my Probiotics at the same time and have yet to re-purchase.

Long story short, is this a possibility as to why I am back in a flare?

Thanks!

As with all antimicrobial agents, pseudomembranous colitis can occur during and up to several weeks after azithromycin therapy.

you also forgot to add you had stopped your rectl meds. You also would have had a chest infection, which can add stress to the body...hence add to a flare. Oh, I'll throw in stress for good measure, discomfort in your upper abdomen, etc...all symptoms that there is something going on.

The zithromax is awesome for me, however...I have no problems on it, but others may not.

You should have been on probiotics during the course of the zithromax...and that would have helped to prevent an unbalanced flora in your colon.

So, it's possible that it encouraged your flare, but I say you were already in a precarious situation. It's not one thing that you caused you the situation, it was probably a combo of all.

It for sure wasn't the chinese food....although that could have contributed to IBS if you have it.

Ain't it all fun?

Welcome to the ambiguity of flaring....you'll not find one answer as to the cause.

I hope your chest infecton improved.

I was on a anti-biotics 4 weeks ago and it definitely stirred up my UC. I was just having 1 BM/day then after the anti-biotics it was up to 5-7/day. I took probiotics at the same time. Now I'm back to about 3-4BMs/day. Wish I didn't have to take the anti-biotics. :-(
31 yr old female currently breastfeeding
Diagnosed 2/29/08 with Mild Universal UC
I've had UC since 2000 but was in remission for most of those 8 years med free
Lialda Colazal & Asacol made symptoms worse, MUCH worse
Not taking any meds for now. May be on 6mp soon?

I am currently taking 100mg of Imuran and have had a nasty cold for 3 weeks so I went to my general practitioner and he gave me a Z-pak too (antibiotics) Should I be concerned? I am actually feeling the gurgles and movement in my belly that isn't normally there. Should I keep taking the antibiotics? My GP knows I am on Imuran and said the drugs shouldn't affect eachother however I wasn't aware that the antibiotics could actually cause a flare! I'm worried. I haven't been sick in almost 6 months and the last time I was hospitalized..... cry

Sorry Katie...looking back at the heading of my post would tend to lead people to believe that I know what I'm talking about. I'm learning, but have got a LONG way to go. There are so many valuable/knowledgeable people on this forum.

What I was getting at, is that my heading should have read,   "Antibiotics = Flare??" because I was wondering if that was the case.

Hope you get through your run of antibiotics ok!

My antibiotic story is a little different than others. I was in a pretty bad flare since before Christmas and my white blood cell count got up to nearly 20k. My doctor prescribed me antibiotics and I was really leery based on my reading on here. However, the antibiotics seemed to actually help me induce remission.

I felt so much better to get rid of the infection I had, get my WBC back to normal, and most importantly my bowel movements went from 8 / day down to 1. It was amazing. It was just a zithromax, pretty basic stuff.

Just like so many things with UC, everybody reacts differently to differently things. Good luck!
Asacol - 12 per day
Prednisone - could be back up to 40 mg : (
Imuran - 100 mg
Omega 3 - 1 per day

Taking your probiotics at least 2 hours after you're finished taking your antibiotics for the day will ensure that the antis won't kill off the pros since antis tend to kill off everything. Doubling up on your pros is fine while taking antis, again, so long as you take the pros after you're done taking the antis for the day.

Yes, a course of antibiotics can certainly trigger a flare. Broad spectrum antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria and upset the natural, healthy gut ecology. When it's necessary to take them, always tell your doc you have UC so they'll know to prescribe one that's gentler on the gut and always follow with high doses of probiotics.

Hoping the Probiotics I was convinced to use by the Nutrition/Vitamin store do it for me and what I believe is an antibiotics induced flare.

Ultimate Flora - 50 billion, are the ones I was convinced to go on.

Quincy, I know you've had success with the Natural Factors, which was what I was going to purchase, but the kind lady convinced me to give these a shot because of the numbers of people who buy them at her store. They sure are pricey$$ ! I guess I'll try them for a month and see how it goes.

That's the one I have been buying, it has lots in it and has a good coating.
They are not as much as some...and a good value for what you get I think/hope.

My store also has a 200 billion Ultimate Flora. I got some antibiotics for a minor thing and so far have decided not to take it, but got the 200 billion ones in case I change my mind.

Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, trying 15/20 mg. Appt 3/6 to discuss Humira, etc.

I hope these help me along in getting rid of this flare. I don't like the feeling of this one, as my BMs are basically all watery diarrhea with blood in several of them through the day.

Trust your instincts! Try another if it seems to bother you. Or take half for a while? When are you taking it? I take mine in the evening.

I should clarify in that I meant that I didn't like this flare I am going through. It seems to be "getting to me" more than others.

I just started these Probiotics on Monday so a bit of time is required before I will likely feel a difference.

I tried a few different probiotics before I settled on mine. But, they won't get you into remission as would meds, per se....they're an addition to make sure the flora of the colon is balanced...especially since you were on antibiotics recently.

If you're getting gassy from them during the day, take them at night on an empty stomach. Remember the timing of them ... not to be taken with meds.

Oh, here's where you need lots of watches with lots of alarms to tell you when to take what...lol...

My dad had 4 alarms in his apartment.....all for meds.

keep us posted.

Augmentin sent me into a terrible flare! It is on my allergy list now. I have taken others since then w/no problem. I think the Z-pack just makes me sick to my stomach but doesn't cause the constant D like the Augmentin did.
