I started Curcumin yesterday (4 pills a day), from AOR supplements. It's a derivative of turmeric and is 95% curcumin, the active ingredient known for it's super health and anti-inflam properties.

I've had 3 normal bms since this afternoon, which hasn't happened in nearly a year, since constipation is often a problem. Of course it could be a coincidence but it's a little freaky -in a good way.

My question; Has anyone else tried Curcumin? Did it help at all?

U-girl
40 yr old female - Arts.
Diagnosed Jan 2008 ulcerative proctitis 9" of lower colon.
Last sigmoidoscopy Jan 2009, 17" inflammation of lower colon.

Always blood in bm, despite anti-inflammatory diet and
enema and oral Salofalk.
Constipation, gas and bleeding are my symptoms of a flare - not diarrhea.
Working with naturopath; taking high quality probiotics, ground flax, Salmon oil, Glutagenics, Aloe Vera juice and a Vegan diet and mega vitamin supplements.

My brother had UC and ended up with an illiostomy after years of struggle.

Have tried Bastyr's formula and peppermint oil formula -no luck. Now trying Curcumin by AOR.

A lot of people have recommended I try it for my mild inflammation. I am almost 100% healed but not quite... I think you will get positive replies. I don't think it's going to put you into remission but it may help keep your symptoms at bay. Nothing natural seems to help me too much but I am going to try curcurmin and boswellia
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron

I have been taking Curamin since February and am almost in remission ( the first time in five years). I really started to notice a difference after taking this supplement. Currently I am down to 2 BM's per day and no blood since April. Hope you have as much luck with it as I have had.

I eat a teaspoon of turmeric morning and night (the pills are simply too expensive for the amount that will actually get absorbed, as curcumin is very poorly assimilated into the body). This has been THE BEST thing I have ever done to treat my UC, and I've tried it all. You should have good results-- it is a natural anti-inflammatory, there is a study showing it is beneficial for UC, and it has many other benefits to the body. I think everyone with UC should be on turmeric / curcumin supplementation.
Dx:

Left-sided UC, Jun 2005. Flex-sig only... clear for first 20cms, then inflamed through next 30cms.

Therapies:

Pharmaceutical: Lialda 2/day, Rowasa/hydrocort as needed
Probiotics: Primadophilus Bifidus
Naturals: Caprylic Acid, Vit ABCDE, Zinc, Turmeric, Bromelain, Fish Oil, Flax Oil

Thanks AKB.

Have you ever tried fresh ground turmeric. It is really beneficial. Much more than the turmeric powder. I have posted a lot of information on this forum about fresh turmeric, its benefits, how to grow, etc. Lots of members are taking fresh turmeric, which is available in most of the Indian / Asian grocerry stores in the US and UK.

You may peel off the turmeric and after slicing into small pieces, eat the same, empty stomach in the morning and evening.

I started taking Curcumin capsules a short time ago too, at the same time I also started on a new probiotic Primadophilus Reuteri and enzymes. Within a few days I noticed a definte improvement. Not sure which if or all are helping, I also take NOW Boswellin. Maybe I am jumping to conclusions, but something seems to be working better than the drugs I was on.

I will cook rice with a tablespoon of turmeric and a tablespoon of butter when I'm flaring. I also eat mild chicken curries.

It's something I can eat that actually reduces the flaring instead of making it worse.

Hi Zippy

Boswelia/Sallaki is supposed to be good for Ulcerative Colitis. Infact, there had been some scientific research on Boswellia and Sulphasalazine. I had also been using Sallaki/Boswellia for UC and it used to put me in remission.

Hi PSA, I see you had surgery so Boswellia must stopped working for you? Haven't heard of Sallaki.
I can imagine being an attorney would be stressful.

With my problems with 5-ASA drugs, if natural stuff and diet fails, I be on the immune drugs or surgery.

Hi LondonRed

Sorry by mistake I pressed the wrong icon and your posts have gone into ignored list. I have not done it intentionally. I will ask the forum moderator to bring you back in my good books again.

I am glad that you have found raw Haldi/Turmeric - I believe you have got the fresh/raw Haldi. It is like fresh ginger.

In so far as quantity is concerned. please take a small piece, say about one inche long and peel it off. Slice it into small pieces and chew properly. It is best to be taken early morning, empty stomach. In the evening, too please have it at a time, when the stomach and intestines are relatively empty, so that it creates a lining on the GI system.

Should you need any further details, please feel free to post. Let me see how to access the ignored list. Cheers.

HI Zippy so far as your query is concerned, Sallaki is a formulation of Boswellia.

I am a big believer in curcumin, but I found it worked better in a drink form, and the only one I have found is called Haldi, which I found at whole foods stores initially and now online. Its been about 2 years since first starting on it, and I have been able to come off steroids(large doses) and stay in remission since that time. I believe it works as both anti inflammatory and immune system modulator, hope this helps

Yuckygut, do you know how much curcumin is in haldi drinks? I'm thinking about picking some up or getting some curcumin by AOR.
    Asacol-12 a day
    1 Culturelle
    1 Canasa
    5g Fish oil supplements
    1 Vitamin
    1 B-12(for anemia)

I was told about 1 gram, or about the equivelant of a half cup of turmeric. I get it at haldi4health on the web or whole foods when I am close to one but its cheaper on the web.

qazwsx, remember that curcumin is the conc. extract of turmeric. It is what is being researched in Alzheimers, cancer prevention, GERD, etc. And remember, not everything works for everybody, all of us with UC already know this. Good luck, and I hope one of those work for you.

I just got my curcumin today and it says take 2-4 per day. From Thorne Research called Meriva Curcumin Phytosome. How are you taking your supplements, 2 at a time on a empty stomach or with food? Please share.

    Thank you! Linda

Very mild left sided (could have fooled me with the "mild")  UC. Started LDN ON 1/25/09, stopped LDN on 5/1/09 didn't seem to help. Supplements: Probiotics, Cipro antibiotics 4/29 for 8 days seems to be helping, no bleeding right now, advanced inflammation control

    Hi.
On the advice of my Naturopath I'm taking 4 AOR Curcumin pills on an empty stomach. TWO of the pills I take before going to bed. The other two are spread out over the morning and afternoon.

I'm not sure if it's working or not....sigh.

    Subdued,

you said that you add a tablespoon Tumeric powder in to your rice...how often do you eat it rice and tumeric?

Also, do you cook the tumeric with the rice or just mix it in after the rice is cooked?

    Thanks!

    Hi Shadam

Let me check the composition of Sallaki/Boswellia. So far I remember I used to take 400mg thrice a day. I would confirm it once again.
