Hey all,

So I am still battling this flare and having diarhea daily, several times a day.
Tonight my fiancee came home and said she was talking to her sister who is a nurse with a husband who also has colitis. They think it's strange that I don't have bleeding and just have diarhea and some discomfort.
They told her that they think it sounds more like Chrones.
My doctor told me that it was colitis, but now they have me a bit worried. What is your guys input? Anybody just have diarhea and no bleeding? Is this normal for Colitis. Do you think I have possibly been misdiagnosed?
Any opinions are welcome....thanks everyone :)

Microscopic colitis is not visable when doing a scope and generally little/no bleeding.

It's possible to have a mild to moderate flare with no bleeding. Have you had a scope and biopsies? I would assume so since your sig says "pancolitis." Although there is a Crohn's colitis, from what I understand, the pattern of inflammation is different between UC and Crohn's colitis. Also, Crohn's goes deeper into the tissues than UC. So, if you've had a scope, your doc probably has you pegged correctly.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999. Have been in remission for years with only a few minor blips. Scope on 6/22 showed no inflammation at all.

Just because you don't see blood does not mean there isn't any. You can always do a fecal occult blood test if you really wanna know if there is blood there.

I think it could be a misdiagnosis or it could just be UC. As far as I know, it is pretty hard to get an accurate diagnosis. I am still unsure as to whether I have Chrons or UC or maybe just colitis. I've had multiple biopsies and they seem to all indicate something different.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...

My doctor was SURE that I have UC, and I only had bleeding at the very height of my flare. I didn't have any at first, and then once I started Asacol the bleeding pretty much quit within a week. So, yes, you can have UC and not have any bleeding.
Status: Remission since late May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Diagnosed with pancolitis on 1/30/09
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa twice weekly, Natural Factors Ultimate probiotic 12/12 Formula, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I am 62 years old and was diagnosed with U/C  6years ago, I was in remission from 2006 until  Jan 2009, for the last 7 months I have had constant Diarreah (cant spell that word) without any blood. My bathroom visits vary from 3-10 times a day. I do not get many cramps but have lost about 30lbs since Jan 2009.
The only medication I am on is ASACOL that I take two tablets( 800 mg each) 3 times a day.  I also take 4 Calcium tablets with vitimin D every day that has dramatically improved my bone density.
I have found foods with spice in ( that I love) really agrivates my condition and my bathroom visits excualate!
I also found Beer to have a similar effect. as well as Bread, oats, and wheat products
My Doctor wants me to start on Remicade next week and I am concerned. I read some of the comments on this subject, and I do not feel I am ill enough? or am I in denial?

I had diarrhea for six weeks and had no bleeding. The bleeding came later. It's hard to predict the symptoms of a flare.

Have you ever bleed before on any other flares?
That's strange you have a sister-in-law in medicine with a husband with colitis. Sounds like a good resource for you.
Let's hope you just have UC without bleeding if that is possible. I have always had blood when I flare except when the flare is calming down. Either way, I think no blood is a positive thing. Good luck. I really like your quote by the way. :)

I've always bled, up until  a month ago. I still have bad diarreah and colon spasms. I had so much pressure that I had fissures and a external skin tag that was cut off last week and I'm still in pain! Maybe the UC is now IBS that's a possibility my rectal doctor said. He said my rectal inflammation was very, very mild compared to last year where it was mild to moderate.
Very mild left sided (could have fooled me with the "mild")  UC. Started LDN ON 1/25/09, stopped LDN on 5/1/09 didn't seem to help. Supplements: Probiotics, Cipro antibiotics 4/29 for 8 days seems to be helping, no bleeding right now, advanced inflammation control

I have never really had any bleeding. I had it once about 2 weeks AFTER a colonoscopy. I'm not sure it it was related to that tho. He did do biopsies and says that it showed up as colitis and that there was no inflammation past the terminal illeum, which could more indicate Chrones.

I am just nervous with the thought that it could be Chrones I guess. I am right now having a bad flare. Does this mean that the Pentasa I'm on is not working anymore? Or could it mean I just need a quick dose of pred to get it back to where the Pentasa can keep it there?

I so hope they find a cure. Losing my colon scares the **** out of me, and theres not much left in there.

You guys are awesome!!

I'd consider using a quick course of pred to get into remission, and I'd definitely take a probiotic. I'd also start some rectal meds (I think they help me a lot, even though I have pancolitis like you do). I used them every night until I'd been in remission for a few weeks, then tapered to every other night, then to twice weekly. I think I'll stay at twice weekly indefinitely.

I had lots of blood with my initial flare 9 years ago. Since then I rarely bleed. I grilled my GI the last time I saw him b/c I was paranoid about having Crohn's instead of UC. He said I definitely have UC based on my colonoscopy and biopsies. I don't think I'll ever be 100% convinced...

Me too. Just D & cramping with this current flare but have had LOTS of blood in the past. I'm grateful for no blood as I am already anemic.

I flared for over a year and never saw blood. Even in the poo testing there was not sign of blood. My GI is sure I have UC. I didn't have any of the DNA markers for Crohn's and my colonscopies looked like UC. My body never shows the right symptoms for most illnesses anyways. The way I think about it is if I didn't have an IBD I wouldn't be respodning to IBD medications.

thanks everyone! There are a couple of you very similar to me, young and new to this.

It's a tough thing to swallow some days. I feel like I should be blessed to not have something much worse, but it still makes some days, especially when flaring, tougher than others.

Thanks guys for your feedback....hangin in there with the rest of ya!!

Hi I'm new to this forum and I have the same signs as you do. Diarrhea, bloating, cramping, but no blood in the stool. I've been through a couple tests and all my doctor's aren't sure what it is. I have an upper endoscopy and I'm getting a biopsy of my Sigmoid Colon on Friday, so maybe that will show something. How were you diagnosed? This has been going on for years and I'm only 20 years old. :( Are there any other tests that I should be advised of for this? Thanks a bunch!
