Anyone get any relief from taking sitz baths?  Is there anything I can put in the water to relieve or shrink hemorrhoids.  Someone told me long ago witch hazel, but I am afraid because I am still in a bit of a flare down there and don't want to make it worse.

Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008 for ten days.
Remission Nov 08 thru May of 09.
Slowly coming out of flare.  Meds: Colazal (6 per day), prednisone 10 mgm and tapering weekly, Cort enema nightly, Canasa in morning, Benicar 20 mg for BP, flaxseed oil 3 x a day, fishoil 2 x a day, probiotic 3 x a day, calcium with D 1x a day and multivitamin.
Doctor had me on 100 mgm of 6MP which drastically lowered my white count.  Now off the 6MP pending results of repeat white count. UGH.

Lots of epsom salts may help ease more of the discomfort but if your hemmies are bad enough then you should try either an over the counter or ask your doc for an RX.

Feel better soon, I know how horrible pain is in that area.

Wait, they have prescriptions for hemmies?! I've been trying Prep H and while it helps, the darn thing just won't go away! Please tell me more? =)

PrepH hasn't helped me. Ive had more luck with Tucks. I think Anusol was bought by tucks. Anusol helped a lot. Calmoseptine can help protect and relieve the pain from a hemmie.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...

Yup, the have RX, it's stronger than the OTC, you should see your doc about it and get it confirmed that it is hemmies for sure anyway.

Check out this link...it's not working if you click on it so you'll have to copy and paste it into your search engine...

What might it be if it's not a hemmie?

I am having problems too. Every night I have been getting a hot bath with Epsom Salts. It helped a little bit. I just started with the Prep H. I have even been using Neosporin. I can't tell if it is hemmorhoids or a tear. I am in so much pain when I go I want to cry.

You need to find out excatly whats going on, stop guessing and see a reputable colorectal doc. If it turns out not to be hemmies or a fissure, have him/her check for levator ani as this can cause terribe pain/burning and makes it most uncomfortable to sit....the pain is often brought on after a BM. Anal sphinters can also experience muscle spasms that along with levator ani require pelvic floor physical therapy. Muscle relaxers and hot baths are very helpful but not the cure.

Dx'd with moderate Pancolits 05/07 better with Pentasa and Cortifoam.
I also take Probiotics, Curcumin, Benefiber and cannot tolerate
artificial sweetners (never could even before UC).
