A few weeks ago I was given RX for dicyclomine for the horrible abdominal pain/cramping.  Was taking 1/3x day but stopped taking during the day as it makes me really sleepy and I'm dragging as it is.  The nurse at my gastroenterologist's office is great about explaining meds but she has been out...Also, a friend suggested bromelaine for acid reflux (undiagnosed/no symptoms except husky voice).  I think that sent me into a flare...Not been doing too well emotionally or physically.   confused

It's strange, I was never offered that, in all this time. I guess it's a muscle relaxer for your gut. Can't help with that, but...

Supplements can be hard on your gut, and psyllium would be very harsh. It would cause me pain.
Do you need all of them?

My doc recommended the psyllium and it seems to help absorb some the liquid so there's more form to bms.  Otherwise it's like turning on the faucet.  Have been watching my diet and have serious problems with fruit and vegetables and iron levels too low.  I try to keep supplements to a minimum but often try what other UC'ers have suggested.

Everyone is different with fiber, some do better and some do worse.
Just wanted to be sure you had tried going without, see if it helped you or had something to do with your pain.

Yes, I take dicyclomine aka Bentyl. It has helped me a lot but I only take it as needed. Have you tried anything other then Asacol? In some people Asacol can cause some issues. If you do not have the proper PH level to properly dissolve this then it may not work. Also some people have issues with mesalamines in general (increased D and abdominal pain). Do you know the extent of your Uc (where it's located in your colon)? Have you tried rectal meds? Rectal meds may help with D as well as ease some of the cramping.

I also have a prescription of Bentyl. I only take it as needed, and haven't needed it for a while. It's a good drug to keep around though.

I take Bentyl too and find it very helpful. But I only use it in bad flares because it makes me sleepy and grouchy...

What dosage are you taking ellebeth and festeris?

I take Bentylol 20 mg at this point...but I started out with 10mg.  I use it as needed, not as a continual dosage.

It can help me relax at night, which is a good thing...
It doesn't make me sleepy during the day, but does "relax" my vision sometimes, depending on how busy I'm "not"...

The stuff is amazing for me....been using it for over 20 years.

Bromelain will help with reflux by helping digestion and empty contents of the stomach maybe a bit quicker. It wouldn't cause you to flare...I would say that you were already on your way to a flare.

You should be on rectal meds....truly!

I have 20mgs of the dicyclomine. Only taking 1x/day though and it does seem to be helping at night. I don't know anything about rectal meds - never been suggested. Early in diagnosis they were going to put me on mercaptopurine(?) but I finally started responding to pred & asacol.

I break a 20 in half unless I'm having a bad day I'll take the other half an hour or two later. It knocks me out!

Funny thing is 20 years ago I was a pill popping, heroin shooting, coke sniffing alcoholic and had a huge tolerance for everything. Now 10 mg of Bentyl and I'm out cold.

Life's funny sometimes :)
