Hey folks - I'm suffering with wicked constipation for the last few days. I had a moderate bm yesterday but for two day before that, nothing and today, nothing.
I'm eating lots of veg, drinking lots and lots of water, exercising and taking the herbal bulk supplement I normally take once and day, three times today and twice yesterday. I tried a heating pad on my tummy today but still no result. I'm soooo bloated and tender, this is just terrible!!
It pisses me off since I eat high fibre/ whole grain all the time -lots of water and I exercise and power walk regularly.

I'm going to pick up some Aloe Vera juice tomorrow morning and drink lots of it if things don't improve.

Btw, my UC seems to bring on constipation first rather than diarrhea.

Any advice or support is welcomed. I feel just gross - so bloated

Prune juice got things moving when I had post-childbirth constipation. And it got things moving VERY quickly. It's nasty, but it only took one glass.
Status: Remission since May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son
Diagnosed with pancolitis on 1/30/09
Meds: Apriso (4 0.375g pills ONCE!! daily), mesalamine enema twice weekly, Natural Factors Ultimate probiotic 12/12 Formula, OrthoNovum, multivitamin.  Used prednisone (starting dose 40 mg) to get into remission.

Prunes/prune juice may be very helpful, though it could take a day or more to kick in so if you need quicker relief I'd go the fleet enema route to get some relief until prunes or prune juice kick in.

Feel better soon, it's aweful being constipated, honestly I think I'd rather have D than constipation (having both at some points in my life I fully understand they each come with alot of discomfort but at least with D you get some relief with getting "stuff" out).

Are you using any rectal meds at this time? If not, you might want to consider using them.

To add to the above suggestions, you could try a stool softener Docusate.

Also, try to massage your belly...start on the lower right side, up to under your ribs, across to the left side, down the left side and in a bit to the right and down. Basically, this is following the colon shape and the direction one poos...lol...

Hope you feel better soon...

Soluable fiber like benefiber, drinking lots of water along with some colace helps... staying active also helps get things moving, even if it's just walking.
Dx'd with moderate Pancolits 05/07 better with Pentasa and Cortifoam.
I also take Probiotics, Curcumin, Benefiber and cannot tolerate
artificial sweetners (never could even before UC).

Hi folks, thanks for all the advice.

Believe it or not, I've drank lots of prune juice in the past. I've taken nearly half a dozen spoonfuls of benefibre in a day, I've choked back spoonfuls of horrible castor oil and I've massage my belly and have made meals based on menus using only the absolute highest in fibre foods on the planet - all of it to no avail. Constipation has plagued me for a long time. EVen post c -sections ( both of them) the nurses were always so curious as to what was taking me so long to pass gas let alone go poo. Oh, and the stool softener pills they give you don't have any affect on me.

I've drank so much water, herbal tea (Muelin Tea/Marshmallow Root) these last few days i feel like i'm swimming in it. I have had success in the past with drinking 12-16 oz (!) of Aloe Vera so after I drop my kids off at school this morning I will pick some up. If you hear a shrill scream across the Eastern provinces of Canada that'll be me drinking that vile stuff - haha. thanks guys for your "poo" support!

Cool.... you can relax now turn
1) Do try spianch...it helps in constipation.
2) Also try quick & easy drink - put one diced apple, pear, some cranberry, kiwi, teaspoon of flaxseed powder....in a blender jar... add apple juice or any of your choice till it covers the diced fruits in jar ....... blend & drink.....this helps!! ..u can add any fruit you want...i stay away from banana & mango as they cause body heat which should be avoided in UC ....also try to include apple & kiwi if you are not allergic to them.

It's seems it's not that uncommon for women that have had C-sections to experiance issues with constipation afterwards, it happend to my oldest sister and one of my friends as well...of course for whatever reasons (IBD-C or IBS-C) some women are just prone to constipation. Regular daily exercise can be very beneficial for this especially if you have chronic constipation (for months/yrs), mind you regular daily exercise is beneficial period, helps with normal bowel function and over-all health.

Glad you got some "relief" hope it continues for you.

thanks for the recipe saposs, i'll keep it in mind. Sometimes I drink ground flax with warm water to help get things moving but it seems that no matter what I try if my body is determined to be constipated than it is.

Daily I take one scoop of Herbulk by Metagenics mixed with water. I was having 1-3 regular bms every day for months until I just recently fell away from Herbulk. In addition to falling away from it I also fell away from my strict diet. I thought I was getting away with it until now. Clearly after a couple of weeks of not being diligent my body starts to suffer.

Yes, qunicy, I continue to use the enemas nightly. If I miss even one I start bleeding.

I just drank a bunch more Herbulk and had yogurt, berries and ground flax for dinner - a little different than the fish and chips and beer I had at the pub last week nono

you guys are the best,

I just wanted to add that i suffer from constipation, actually it will be 5 days tomorrow and i am starting to feel uncomfortable.

I tend to alternate between loose stools then constipation. But then sometimes things can be just normal. It really does change everyday for me, so i never know what my bowels are going to be doing from one day to the next.

I find keeping myself busy, and active helps me mentally, as i tend to get very anxious about having colitis, which then brings on my IBS!!!!!!!

I hate this disease.
Ulcerative colitis for around 15 years untreated (Im am 28 years old now)

ASACOL, PREDNISONE, PENTASA do not work for me. I do not want to try remicade. Possible surgery in the future.

I am on no medication, the doctors do not know what to do with me, so very concerned about my future.

My biggest concern BOWEL CANCER :O(

Mercury...Since you have IBS, you should consider to ask the doc for a prescription of an antispasmodic. I use dicyclomine....I would suggest 10mg to start.

It will help relieve the schizoid gut reactions..lol.

Fibre will also help as well as probiotics. Something to consider...

Activa helped me a bit, but you sound like your constipation is more serious, so maybe just try a probiotic in pill form.

Also I did read about kiwis having sort of a laxative effect, so go for it. Plus they're delicious lol even if they do make my mouth feel weird.
