I am on Salofalk which is basically the same as ASacol...the pills are 500mg each. When I was frist diagnosed I was told to take 12 pills a day even thought the pharmacist says 8 is the max.  This kept me well until I started to slack off and was hardly taking them..took them here and there..and then got pregnant..I think I took 4 a day while preggo and everything was bliss.
After the pregnancy I flared big time and two years later after prednisone and humira (not on either any more) I still can not say I am in remission.
I just recently got off Humira. On Humira I was going 3-5 times a day with urgency. STrangely when I got off humira I started going 1-3 times a day, still urgent though.
While on Humira I wasnt really taking Salofalk religiously..yes I was cheating.
But since I got off I have been taking 8 a day every day..I would say for about 3 weeks. I still have that urgency and I know its at the bottom and I may need something rectal but yesterday I decided to take 9 X 500mg SAlofalk a day instead.
Would increasing by one pill work? Or should I go back to my original dose of 12 per day that prescribed when I first got diagnosed?
Do these pills really work?

I really bet the rectal mes would help you.

Generally it's said that the max dose for Asacol is 12 pills a day, but I've been on 16 a day for some years now (5 years? 8 years? I ought to look that up.) I recently expressed some concern about this to my new GI, and he said not to worry, that's it's really hard to take "too much" 5-ASA and it's a very safe drug.
So, if you were on 12 before and it was a good thing, I would think you might try that again.... not much to lose, really.
Do they really work? lol I ask myself that from time to time. I think they do; I have not had a flare bad enough for hospitalization since I started them. I am quicker to take action when I feel a flare coming on, but also, I need to think that the flares are milder because of all the asacol. Sort of like, "I'm not aware of the benefit of taking them, but if I stopped I'd sure be aware of the negative effect of not taking them..."

call your doc for Salofalk retention enemas. You shouldn't keep increasing your oral dosage because it won't ever be enough to totally treat the rectum.

You are flaring, though, even though it's not bad. I'd try a suppository...it should be easy to hold in. I know a lot of people use them in the AM and an enema in the PM. How often is your son getting up at night? And can your husband get up with him instead? Then maybe you can use an enema.

Hi KrissyUC,

Are you saying that you took salofalk during pregnancy? I was diagnosed with UC 2 months ago, but had symptoms for 6 months. I am taking 4 pills of salofalk a day (the doctor recommended 6), plus probiotics, and following a no sugar, no carbs diet. The bleeding stopped and I am feeling better but still have a soft stool (sorry for the details). I had a miscarriage 4 months ago and thinking of getting pregnant again, but I am so afraid being on medication while pregnant. I am thinking getting off the salofalk (medication) before trying to conceive, but I am in a dilema since don't want my colitis to get worst.

Please can you let me know if you were in salofalk during pregnancy..

Take care,
Ketti

Ketti, yes I took Salofalk 4 pills a day when I was preggo. I Was very looose with it and would forget all the time ..I felt so good I guess I thought I did not need meds..but lo and behold when my son was born the mother of all flares hit home..
Please do not make this mistake..talk to ur doc..take your meds..cause of flare during or after pregnancy when you are trying to care for a newborn is NOT fun...I had a very very hard time and two years later things have still not settled down.
