So I have some samples for Lialda that expired 10/09. I am seeking opinions on what I should do with them. Are they safe to take? I have had them from a year ago; my doctor switched me to Asacol. Now I am back on Lialda. I still have these samples around and have not taken them but am wondering because they are not that old. Should I discard them, or take them to the pharmacy to discard? Or do you think they are OK to take. These meds. are expensive so I hate to waste them but am also hesitant to take them. If they were 6 months or more past their expiration I would not even debate it. Opinions?

I'd take them. From what I understand, meds may become less effective after their expiration date has passed, but they won't be harmful. I expect that the drug companies are pretty conservative when putting expiration dates on drugs, because they've got so much liability, and like you sadi, they're not that old.

I would take them too.  I used to work for a doctor and he would always give out samples that were expired.  LOL.

Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008 for ten days.
Remission Nov 08 thru May of 09.
Flare May of 09 thru Aug of 09.  Very short remission.  Flared again Nov 1st.  Started Remicade Nov 18th.  Felt great after first two infusions.  Suffered a set back after 3rd infusion on Dec 31st.  Meds: Benicar, Colazal, Prednisone (hopefully short course), Calcium with D, multivitamin, probiotic.  Rectal meds..Proctofoam, cort suppositories....cannot retain the enemas.

beeswax...how many do you have? a month supply?

I wouldn't take them if they were after 6 months to the year mark of expired....

Will you be getting another script for them so that you don't run out?

I have a filled prescription. I also have about 48 pills left that are the samples. I thought I might just go half and half with the new and old. I just don't want to throw them out. I am going to be losing my job the first of June; so unless they pass the government extension supplementing cobra payments, I will not have health insurance. I am really concerned about this. I will not be able to afford cobra on my own. I figure I can keep filling my prescriptions while I have insurance and stock pile my meds. as much as I can, keeping the newer ones. I actually got a card with my more recent samples of Lialda so that my copay is only 10. a month, with insurance. Anyway, I am trying to plan for the future.

Sounds like a perfect plan! I'd take the samples firstly and then stockpile the others. Maybe your doc should be able to give you some samples once again.

How sad and stressful regarding your job....hope you'll be able to be put into another position so that you don't have to have your insurance lapse.

Thanks quincy; that is my plan with the pills. My doctor is good about giving me samples so perhaps I can get more when I see him in a few weeks.

This is a stressful year for me. I have been working at the same place for 9 years, so leaving it is a big change. On top of that I turn 50 in a couple of weeks, and my daughter is graduating from college in May. She will be back home for me to support. I am a single parent and have raised her on my own. I am trying to think of this all as a change for the better, for becoming more fully myself is some way. Anyway, I appreciate your kind words.

Make sure to check the "sticky" post at the top of the main UC forum page titled "UC resources." There's a link to needymeds, and it lists links to all of the patient assistance programs for the drugs used to treat IBD. Since you won't have insurance, you should be able to get your drugs covered by the drug companies. I'm sorry that you're losing your job...that really stinks.

Shire has a good variety of Patient Assistance Programs to provide free or discounted Lialda to people who've lost their jobs, aren't insured, and/or have low incomes. If you haven't already checked that out:
http://www.lialda.com/lialda-patient-assistance-program.aspx

Here is the needymeds link for Lialda, which actually only describes one of those programs (so don't be discouraged -- if you don't qualify for this one, still call Shire using the phone number on the above page and see what they can do for you):
http://www.needymeds.org/drug_list.taf?_function=name&name=Lialda
- Early-30s female, diagnosed Jan 2010 after first flare starting Dec 2009. Most likely ulcerative proctitis.
- 4.8mg/day oral Lialda since late Jan; not clear yet how effective (symptoms come and go).

I am on the Shire assistance program for almost a year now and everything is seamless ... I just have to submit an original doctor's Rx for my Lialda and mail it in to have it shipped straight to my door.
2 Lialda a day
Fiber supplements
iron supplements
vitamin D supplements

Thanks all! This is great information. I am still hoping that somehow my cobra payments will be supplemented so I can still pay for doctor's appointments and my daughter's care. We both have pre-existing conditions so getting health insurance outside of a job or cobra is not likely to happen. It is comforting to know that there is assistance for my meds. It is frustrating that I or anyone else has to worry so much about taking care of basic needs. Again, thank you for all the information and resources.
