I had *really* bad ones after my son was born. I got them during delivery (pushing a bit wrong, I suppose) and then they got worse with all of the diarrhea that followed with the flare. Anyway, I tried PreparationH, Tucks pads, and a few other things, but the thing that finally worked was OTC cortisone creme.

I think Sitz baths, alum root powder mixed with water, and a hydrocortisone prescription cream called analpram are helpful right now, but I want more ideas.

I was doing so well with the consistency of my bowel movements (I thought), then boom, and they hurt.

You may want to check with your doctor to make sure you are dealing with hemorrhoids and not an ulcer that has spread outside of the rectum.

What works for me is soaking witch hazel on a cotton ball and keeping it there between my cheeks. I have heard reports that DMSO works for hemorrhoids but that may be dangerous since DMSO works directly into the bloodstream. When curing yourself you must first remember to first do no harm and DMSO may not qualify.

I find that cutting open a vitamin E gel capsule and spreading it over the hemorrhoid is also very effective. And sitz baths do work.

Hi Ellen,  I just got over a case of external hemmeroids a couple of weeks ago.  They were so painful but what I found helped was hot baths many times a day and they say to lay on your left side so the pressure is off your rectum.  Fibre was important like Metamucil because all of a sudden because of the pain I was constipated I had constant pressure and urges but nothing came out.  Drink tons of water.  I also took this homeopathic stuff by Hylands for hemmeroids, it seemed to do something.  I also took witch hazel many times a day on a cotton ball and applied it to the area and left it there.  Vaseline, penetane cream or vitamin e applied to the rectum so things pass easier.  Someone suggested that I wear support socks for vericose veins and boy did they ever help for the throbbing.  I put them on as soon as I got up and wore them all day.   The last thing I used was Anusol suppositories with cortisone in it.
This is the second time I had a problem with hemmeroids but they went away this time in about 2.5 weeks, last time it was months of agony because I thought it was the colitis and I used so many rectal meds that it irritated my rectum so bad that it cause my UC to flare it was a mess.

Ucch, this is irritating not throbbing. It seems beyond hope. All I care about is not feeling the irritation.

Does a suppository or suppository cream help the external hemmies. Should I put the cream (analpram or anusol) on the outside?

Should I just treat the outside? Does treating the inside matter?

Have you taken a look-see as to what it is that you actually have?

I call it bbs....blue butt syndrome, and yes...they hurt like hell.

I use OTC hydrocortisone cream alone, rubbed in very very well. I then put some proctocedyl cream over that and a bit inside if the area is really badly throbbing.

Do you have a lot of gas as well? Gas will exacerbate them bigtime.

I second the OTC Hydrocortisone cream for external. I also have noticed I like the preparation H cream better than the ointment because the cream has a little bit of a numbing/pain relief agent. For internal, my doctor has given me Hydrocortisone suppositories. You just use those twice a day for 3-4 days. I have heard of another suppository that has a numbing or pain thing... Anusol? But never tried that one.

Got the hemmie to shrink (whoo boy) credit combo of sitz baths, Analpram HC...still hurts a little.

Ugly, ugly, ugly. Glad I'm married. That's all I'll say.

I was using calmoseptine on some when I had them. I think it helped a bit. I didn't have much luck with tucks or anusol (I think they are the same brand). I tried prepH too, that didn't do much to soothe.

I hope I never have to experience those again! I had two severe thrombosed external hemorrhoids, one right after another and they were huge! I had to go to a general surgeon who lanced them in his office to remove the huge clot that was inside. I kept my crack packed with gauze for a few days to absorb any bleeding and I tell you, it's almost like instant relief! Granted for a day and a half you'll have a pretty painful experience with the small incision areas but by the second day that pain is 80 percent gone! He gave me two refills of Vicodin to help. I had an empty sack of skin the size of the hemorrhoid left but that eventually sucks back and flattens back out with your body in about a couple weeks and I can't even tell I had em

Oh and I forgot to mention...the procedure SUCKS for it requires him to numb the hemorrhoid by directly injecting numbing meds directly into it

My doctor prescribed me rectal rockets. A compounding pharmacy made them up for me. They helped some. I also use the Analpram cream, tucks pads and witch hazel. When they were so bad I would soak the pad with the witch hazel and lay on my stomach on the bathroom floor doing Soduku puzzles letting it soak in. They are still bad. All I wanted to do was go have them fixed when my flare got better. Now I am 7 weeks pregnant, flaring with hemorrhoids. Can only imagine how much worse they are going to get.
UC since 2002
Severe flare since Nov/08

I will NEVER think twice about getting them lanced again...a day worth of throbbing pain from the procedure to have the blood clot removed was WORTH IT! I think they have to be thrombossed to have it done...mine where huge but it was almost instant relief. I got a script for pain meds and by the next day the pain was 80% better!

blksteeda,
How did you get it lanced. Are you in an HMO? I've showed this thingtwice to my primary cGP and he just prescribes me the hydrocortisone cream and it keeps coming back. If it feels hard inside does that mean it's thrombosed. And removing the blood clot inside really makes the difference?

I saw my GI one day to have a look at it...it was about the size of a grape and bleeding badly. The blood clot inside is what was causing it to swell severely. He sent me across the hall from his office to a general surgeon who I paid a $50 co pay for a specialist on my health insurance, he looked at it, suggested that we remove the clot and we did. He pretty much bent me over a chair, injected the hemorrhoid with numbing meds and on my first hemorrhoid made two 1cm incisions and squeezed the clot out. He asked if I wanted to see it and he showed me all the clotted blood he got out. He then packed my butt crack with gauze and sent me on my way with some pain meds. Told me just to soak it the next day in a warm tub and some antibacterial ointment when possible. It took all of about 5 mintues. The second Hemorrhoid was bigger and took 3 small incisions. I will say the throbbing pain the day of the procedure was a bit uncomfortable BUT the pain meds made it tolerable and it was 80% better the next day. I was suffering for two weeks prior to that and tried EVERY trick in the book to get rid of them. Even that Analpram stuff didn't make a dent. You will have an "empty" hemorrhoid after the clot is removed for about two weeks while your body tightens up that skin but both of mine went away in about two weeks. I did get a bill for the procedure of what my insurance didn't cover which was around $150
