Can you tell from the smell of your gas that something is not right in there? like does an inflammed colon give off a smellier gas?
I remember when I was flaring for the first one, one of my symptoms was awful smelling gas and I did hear this can be a classic sign of UC or CD.
I also have bad smelly gas in the morning after using an enema, do enemas make gas smell bad as well?
sorry for this rant  but late in the afternoon i tend to have really bad smelling gas like i used to have when i was flaring..but im not flaring thats whats weird..

I'm curious as well for my gas will send the dog to the other room. I've been flaring for a couple years now and my bad gas comes and goes. Not entirely sure what causes it...hell, sometimes I have to follow the dog

My me, the smell of gas depends on what I eat, which is the main reason I have always avoided sorbitol. I try to avoid eating foods that cause smelly gas. Most of my gas is just air, no smell. I'll get all bloated with air when I'm flaring. Again, it's just air.

I have found that people's body odor is affected by what they eat. For instance, people who eat a lot of garlic will have a bad garlic body odor. Chocolate will also give me a bit of smelly gas, but not nearly as bad as sorbitol. And then of course, there are beans...
Colitis is in remission. No longer get IBS.

Figuring out how to reduce a flare or get into remission is a trial and error experience. Don't expect your GI to have all the answers. He was trained in making diagnoses, prescribing medications, and surgically removing the colon. He was not trained in alternative treatments. That's why they are called alternative treatments.

What works for me: Fecal transplantation, Probiotics, Anti-inflammatory foods, No HFCS, No crystalline fructose, No foods high in fructose, No artificial sweeteners, No pro-inflammatory foods when flaring, vitamins & supplements, Lexapro (for stress).

During a flare, food ran through me, and the stool that was formed smelled awful. As my system calmed down and more of my food was digested coming through, the less it smelled. And now it hardly smells at all. Smelly poo is a sign of a flare.

Still on pred (7.5 alt 5 for another week) and feeling like I'm in remission, but not really cuz I'm still on pred.

Have you cut back on the VSL? or taking it every day?

Yes, Salofalk farts...pu, but they don't last for during the day.

If you just started any other supplements or fibre supplements...could be that.

Could be food-related....what have you eaten new for the past 2 days? Any garlic, meat, asparagus or cruciferous veggies?

Gas during my flares was absolutely AWFUL - always. Now, it's bad only when I eat something that causes it.

Gas smell is directly linked to what you eat. My husband who does not have digestive problems is thinking about renting himself out as a weapon to the governement or to redecorators for paint removal in buildings. :)
Presently on: 600 mg. Remicade every 5 weeks
                   Venofer infusion every 5 weeks
                   B12 every 5 weeks
                   12 Asacol daily
                   Zofran as needed

Omgoodness yes! With this recent flare, I would do the SBD's and my daughter would come into the room. Stoically walk back out without a word then calling over her shoulder when she was a safe distance away and yell "Mom! You stink!!" I sometimes blame in the dogs but then they give me a look like who are you trying to fool lady??

yes, the gas comes and has continued while in a constant flare since november 2010. Lots of gas sharing, but I cannot find a solution anywhere. I have eliminated all high sulfur foods (yes, the delicious foods) and have tried Makers Diet, SCD diet, my own diet, liquid diet, protein shake to rest the gut, eliminated fresh fruit and vegetables, mostly eat chicken, fish, cooked limited vegetables, white rice, coconut water, broth, and not much else. Still cannot tolerate almond butter, almond flour, or even yogurt because of the sulfur that sets off more gas. I have had many blood transfusions and the worst thing is the gas comes and then the bleeding starts up. I keep thinking that if I can reduce the hydrogen sulfide in the gut I could reduce the gas. But how??? Anybody done real research on this or found a way to reduce the gas?

remacaide 10mg, imuron 100mg, 40mg prednisone, occational prednisone suppositories
fish oil
flaxseed oil
licorice root
activated charcoal tabs
glutamine
ultrainflamax protein
ultra clear protein
coconut oil
NEW FIRST TWO WEEKS- I STARTED OVAMED

Forgettting different foods that cause smells, there's a specific smell that comes only with UC.

I have a theory that the strange smell occurs when there's blood in the BM.

I know there will be blood if I smell it - I know there won't when it's not there.

My husband teases me that I have a keen sense of smell, but, yes, I can tell by the smell when there's excess mucus or if there's going to be blood.

Digestive enzymes with meals and Gas-X pills do help w little bit with the gas, but ultimately, addressing the inflammation is what reduces it for me.

What is odd is how I consume several things that make me have gas within 15 minutes - bit of a stretch to see how it can happen that fast and make it the full length of my tract in short time.

Now recently I have started having a lot of gas. Normally the BAD gas is a clear sign I am heading toward a flare. However I am still solid and it is not so acidic that it burns so it is an odd pairing. This began after eating a salad with aged red wine sauce ( vinegar ). If I take powder drinks that are not really food and do not normally bother me I get a ton of gas now too. So I return to pasta, eggs, fish and no gas.

I understand the gas is from feeding the bad bacteria but it is more akin to throwing gas on a fire with how fast the reaction is.

I always thought that the weird smell I get was from all the asacol since gas is a side effect, while others were form certain foods. I could have just made this all up though. Interesting post nonetheless.

Not to be too lighthearted, but my sister and I both have ulcerative colitis and the term "colitis fart" had taken on a very special meaning in our house as we were growing up...

I once had an explosion of the most toxic smelling gas and stool that came out and I was in a public place. I could hear the employees complaining outside the bathroom door about the sceptic system or something. I was SOOOO embarrassed and there was nothing I could do but sit there and wait for me to finish so I could get the heck out of that bathroom! But, that particular gas smell, which still happens on occasion from time to time, and I have NO idea what food would cause that kind of gas, is something you will never forget, like a dead animal or something... TOXIC!
