I've recently been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and I'm going in for my first colonoscopy on Thursday. Mostly I'm just freaking out about the prep. The instructions provided by my doctor's office state that I should start drinking gavilyte around 2 PM the day before my colonoscopy and then take 4 dulcolax around 8 PM. Isn't 4 dulcolax excessive, and will it even be necessary after not eating anything and drinking gavilyte all day? I have taken dulcolax once in the past and all I remember is horrible abdominal cramps and that it lasted a very long time. I'm scared that if I take dulcolax at 8 the night before I'll still be feeling it the next morning when I have to go in for the colonoscopy, and that's not good, right?

I think the best thing to do would be to call the doctor's office tomorrow and explain your nervousness about the ducolax and the cramps it gave you in the past - maybe they have an alternative they could have you do.
As far as the prep still being actice when you go in for your appointment, you could ask about that, also. My experience has been that the doctor's instructions are 'spot on", timing-wise, and I've not had an issue.
I used to have to travel 1 1/2 hours for my scopings, and when I had an 8 am appointment, I'd have to get up at 3 to take the second dose (when the prep required two doses)....At my pre-scoping appointment, they would sit there with me and count out the hours and figure it out so I'd be ok for the trip. So, probably what your doc's office has you doing is fine, but really, I'd call and ask!

Hi

I take 4 dulcolax 3 x weekly as my colitis is mainly constipation with bleeding and mucous. The time for 4 X 5mg dulcolax to take effect on me is approx 26 hours, so i would take them a little earlier than 8 o clock just to be on the safe side. Yes i was prescibed this to stop faecal impaction and reduce pain and gas as inever get D with my UC.

I did call my doctor and he told me that the earliest I should take the dulcolax is 7 PM. I still didn't get an answer as to why I can't take it earlier in the day. But I guess you're right and they do know what they're talking about?

The Gavilyte will flush everything out of your system anyway, and I'd think the ducolax is just to make the stool softer so it [passes easier...? Once the gavilyte cleans you out, there won't be anything left to poop out, so....you asked, they answered, I would trust they know what they want and do it.
The prep is never "fun" but it's only part of a day - you'll get through it! (the scoping itself is easy in comparison, in my experience!)

That's why I was wondering why I need to take 4 dulcolax after a whole day of drinking Gavilyte! But yes, you're right. They probably know what they're doing.
Thank you so much for your help and support! Hopefully the prep won't be too horrible and go relatively smoothly. I've been reading up tips from other people.
