I had started taking psyllium husk powder capsules, but noticed the capsules were going straight through me without being ingested. This week I switched to psyllium husk powder, but can't seem to find a decent way to make it taste good. Up to this point I've been taking 4 tbsp every morning, mixing with water. I've gone from going to the bathroom 5 times a day to 3, still not solid, but am very happy with the urgency improvement.

How do those of you that take psyllium powder make it more bearable without losing the effects?

Thanks

I mix it in applesauce for my daughter. She is currently only taking 1 tspn. I litterally mix it right before she is about to eat the apple sauce otherwise the applesauce gets sooo thick it's hard to get down.

We Have tried putting it in a shaker with orange juice as well. She prefers the applesauce.

You could try splitting the dose. 2 tblspn in the morning w/applesauce and 2 tblspn in the evening.

You said that the capsules were going straight though you?  Are you talking about gelatin capsules?

I didn't know that was possible.

When I was in remission I didn't have any problems with the pills being absorbed... but with the current flare I'm in, I always found them about 5 hours later after ingesting in the toilet in the same pill form with the psyllium still inside. When I'm in a flare everything just goes straight through me without being processed - including pills unfortunately.

I had been taking Now Foods psyllium husk capsules. So far, the psyllium taken in and of itself has been a major improvement.

I just mix mine with water like they say and drink it quickly. Best brand I found was the Source Naturals psyllium powder. I think it does seem to help somewhat. I have mix it with Great Plains liquid bentonite clay before, and may have helped me into a previous remission, but it tends to constipate a bit. Got to be careful with that clay, not too much.

I normally eat a tbsp and then gulp water, and never realized how much the psyllium husk powder expands. Yesterday mixing it with water first created almost a gelatin type substance... I guess that's what happens inside our stomach to slow everything down. Still working quite well, only went twice yesterday.

I blend it into a smoothie. You need to drink it up before it gels though, then things get weird :p

You throw it in enough water to gulp and immediately drink it. It's not something you let sit for more than 10 seconds. I briefly mix it for about 3 seconds then gulp. Twice a day does me good.

Started using the powder four weeks ago and have to say I've noticed an improvement, thank goodness; But,-I've also noticed that my throat is sore, burning sometimes (not immediately after drinking), and I seem a bit stuffy in the nasal passages. As a singer this is definitely not something I want. Has anyone else noticed this at all? I wondered if using capsules instead might make a difference, with the powder not touching the throat, but if I'm sensitive to the ingredient then that probably wouldn't make any difference. I used a brand with a built in orange flavoured drink and nasty sweeteners,- which I'm changing- so that may not have helped. Thanks.

Actually, psyllium SEED powder is better than husk but if you have already got it, fine, next stock should be seed powder. Get it from the bulk suppliers, its cheaper.

Personally, I mix it in water and gulp it down without it touching any of my oral mucosa :) For DS, I mix it with Apple Sauce and activated charcoal and feed him as 'The Black Med' (I use this mixture as detox). Since Psyllium husk/seed powder bulks up once inside absorbing water and acts something like a sponge, make sure to distance it at least an hour apart from food or any meds that you take. (Nobody knows how much it will adsorb and make drugs/food unavailable for further processing or absorption but play safe than sorry).
Diagnosed March 2007 with left sided UC at the age of 30.
Currently on,
Colazal 9 daily, Imuran, 200mg daily, Vit. B12, 1mg, Multivitamin, 1 tablet daily, Fish oil 2400mg daily, Vit D 2000 IU daily.

Verapamil 240mg for migraine, Migraine episode now at least twice a month,
Ibuprofen 400mg is the only solution (but leads to bleeding). Looking for alternatives.

mum..definitely use the capsules instead of the powder if you're having any effects.

Take it with your meals...

i actually don't mind the taste. i started taking it about 3 days ago after i read that it helps with diarrhea and bulking the stool. i just take a teaspoon with some water. it has a nice nutty flavor.

The doctor prescribed Fybogel, which is psyllium, but whether it uses husks or seed I don't know. Why is seed better? Since my last post I've researched whether psyllium can make throats sore; apparently it can if one has an allergy to it - but I'd imagine that would show immediately not gradually. Also I looked up the effects of Saccharin and Aspartame, and it seems that they can have a bad effect on the throat and nasal passages; many people have had problems with them, (they seem pretty dangerous actually). So, first I'm going to take out the sweeteners and see if the throat improves, and if not then try the capsules. Are they as efficient?

How can you take out the sweeteners?

I only use the capsules now...no problems and yes..they are efficient.

I've never used the seed powder...it's subjective as to what is better than the other.

trial and error..

Ah, here is the post I was reading earlier about solutions to help the taste of psyllium This is what I do so you may want to try this. Use a packet of EmergenC or equivalent to flavor your drink. I have read some material on the benefits of taking Vit. C with fiber so this works well. However, I know not many are fans of the EmergenC tastes. Didn't take me long to grow use to it, so give it a try.

Recently began consuming pysllium, mixed with water I find it unpalatable, the taste reminding me of funky mushrooms which is no fun but I found I like mixing into a bowl the psyllium and my favourite yogurt. Its quite tasty. To entice one further one could add a tiny splash of honey. Like always drinking water throughout the day is essential. Bon appetite!

Don't spend top $$ for brand. Majority of psyllium comes from India. I get it from Mountain Rose Herbs, no complaints except their shipping charge, that is also from India.
