The word parasite caught my eye because I have been wondering if the (fungal infection) to both my thumbs could have caused my colitis. Report says colitis. GI dr. told me UC. I developed ridges to my thumbs 6 or 7 months ago and was treated with 5 weeks of Lamicil. The name of the rare microb is in my report which I will get when i get back to work Monday. After 5 weeeks it was still there, went to a dermatologist who said,"give it a couple more months for anti-fungal to work. Well, in the mean time my bowel habits started to change several months ago with bleeding, mucus and diarrhea sent me running to my dr.

I would doubt it caused your UC. You don't even know yet if you have it, right?
But...I'd lean more to the lamicil that could have caused something.

Were you evern on any topical antifungals for your thumbs?

Hi Quincy,

My dr. put me on Lamicil for 5 weeks because of a microb that was found in my nails. I noticed my bowel movements were a bit diff now that I look back over 6 months since i had contracted this fungal infection, I think from manicure. No.. my dr. did not give me a topical. I'm so mad right now because i have a feeling whatever was in my nail infected my colon and now I really want to know.

ps quincy. As a nurse I now understand how patients really feel about dr.s not listening and not treating the cause or even taking a moment to look for answers. I had a nail clipping done so all my primary or the dermatologist had to do was look at the type of microbe on the report and treat it with the proper medication. Probably needed an antibiotic and not an anti-tungal and in the meantime it's growing in my colon possibly.

It didn't cause your UC. Have you been checked for fungal infection through stool samples?

I'm in the beauty business and would never get manicures, etc...weird, eh? I have many clients who have had fungal infections...none have UC or bowel problems related to it. They all, however, have had topical treatments.

You, being a nurse, can also pick up all sorts of stuff as well as pass it on...so you have to be dilligent in protecting yourself and others. Antibiotic wouldn't help a fungal infection, unless you had a bacterial infection in your nails..different beasts.

I realise one needs to find blame, but I would more lean to the oral med or the c.diff or a combo of the two to trigger the UC to begin. Remember, one has to be predisposed to autoimmune reaction initially.....so the magic combination happened. Nothing you can do to change it....

I have not been checked for fungal via my stool but thank you. I had my nail clipped and sent to microbiology 3 months ago which showed a microbe ( I do not remember the name) I will get it when I get back to work. I'm just in the investigation process as and not looking to blame anyone. Yes. I do understand universal precautions too. Just asking questions to learn answers and piece my history together so that i too can educate others as well as my patients.

eeek. That's exactly why I don't get manicures. People think I am weird because I don't like being touched with the tools but I don't care, it grosses me out. I know people go in there with nail bed infections and let them use the tools on their hands/feet. I know they sterilize but it's not enough. I have heard stories of people getting MRSA from nail places, clean ones... Be careful! It's especially bad for people like us with UC, we don't need an infection, then we have to take antibiotics that can cause more problems. Not worth it.

How do I delete this post? My computer is running slow and it's hard to take the time for each reply and I will research this on my own I think.

If you really want to delete it, there should be a red X over on the right side of the page, just under the blue bar. You'll need to delete your very FIRST post in the thread.

However, you can also ignore it and not worry about replying any more. Nobody will get their feelings hurt.

what did your thumbnails look like - did they have horizontal ridges?

I have something similar if so... let me know and if you find out what microbe it was.
