Hey i sometimes get this problem, I started getting it when i switched to generic colazal but now it's back.

I'd get mucus leakage during the day, especially after (or during) a meal. Basically I have to go wipe my butt. It's really demoralizing. I'm on Lialda now and I thought it had been working better than the colazal, but then I started getting this issue. In the past, when this started I was getting gas and mucus and I started taking Align probiotic and Gas-X and it got much better. I was trying to search the forum and it seems like a fiber supplement might help?

Any recommendations - I know nothing about fiber supplements. Pills? Drinks?

I guess I need something to dry it up - I've noticed that if I drink the next day it's not as bad, I assume due to dehydration.

Any help would be appreciated. I will be monitoring my condition and possibly going back on colazal if this continues.

I don't have any good suggestions as far as supplements are concerned, but I wanted to let you know you aren't alone with this. I had this problem during a flare once. It is bad enough to have to run to the bathroom all the time, let alone leaking when you are out and about. I feel for you. It didn't last very long for me. I was able to get into remission during that flare with the help of suppositories and Asacol. In the interim, I resorted to using pantyliners so that I could at least "refresh" throughout the day.

Yeah, I'm a guy, so I don't have pantyliners, nor panties for that matter. Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. Maybe I should talk to my doc since I just switched to Lialda, from Colazal, at first I was gaining weight, doing well, but now this. I don't want to blame the lialda per se yet, as I also have been using a fluoride mouthwash courtesy of the dental hygenist. Or perhaps the Colazal was still in my system when I started Lialda and the combination was of benefit?

On Lialda 4Xday; Folic Acid 1mg; Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc/D3 combo

Align probiotic has helped me

Ha! Good luck trying to stop this issue- even though I'm doing well re. bm's, mucous is a constant for me. 9 out of 10 times I pass gas, it's accompanied by mucous. I don't get leakage so much from my butt, but I do get mucous leakage from an RV fistula. All the time, every day, etc. No amount of meds or supplements has made any difference whatsoever. SO- I highly suggest you invest in some of those boxer/briefs & a big pack of Carefree extra-long, unscented, heavy flow pantyliners. You'll thank me, for real. Fiber supplements *may* help, but probably not- I do fiber supps daily, & while they do seem to firm up the actual bm's, the mucous is still around, no change in that.

Lialda made things worse for me. I pulled myself off it after 2 weeks.

For about 4 weeks I've been struggling with the mucus factor as well. It began with a significant inflammation that spread to my buttocks and has been the 'gift that keeps giving' ever since. I'm not sure what triggered it, since my diet has been very consistent and well documented. For all I know it's related to me weaning off Prednisone...

Once the inflammation hit, I could no longer tolerate Rowasa due to significant pain once the liquid hit inflamed tissue. I switched to Canasa, but after a few weeks there has been no change. Clearly, I need a new approach and am researching my options.

As a country raised guy, I balked like an iron jawed mule when my wife suggested I use her panty liners. After several days I realized that there was no shame using the best tools available to maintain sanity and dignity. I discovered that these 'feminine' prooducts are just what a person needs when leaking copious amounts of mucus. I'd rather use them than be in public showing off a wet behind or changing my drawers several times a day.

The most surprising thing for some men to learn is that using pantyliners does not cause any "man parts" to fall off. It's safe, go ahead and try it! wink

I was in the same boat, gas and mucous... embarrassment- I did steroid enema's and then canasa suppositories,
amongst my other meds, and the "leakage" ceased within a few weeks. I still have gas and mucous (y) bowel movements but no accidents for going on 6 weeks now.

Does anyone's mucous involve a long clear stream, that doesn't break off. It's new for me in the past six months. Worried about fistula maybe.
proctitis 2004, Asa sup., 2006 hydrocort sup. worked for a while when I remembered to use them, 2009 spread to left put on prednisone, asacol, then Apriso. Switched docs tried lialda, rowasa, back to hydro enema and Apriso. 2010 6mp added, 2011 pancolitis ,Remicade, bad flare after no.1,2, pred now, and rem

mine was either formed kinda like a large whitish clot all by itself, with blood (obvious bright red) or attached to
a stool.
